Watched a bit of ladies hockey, Canada vs Switzerland. Shots were 40-3 at one point (for Canada)

Are there women's hockey countries that can challenge the US or Canada?

Nope. For profit youth sports and title IX do wonders for women’s team sports

it's interesting to see how the USA's advantage in soccer up through 2010 or so got smaller as women in traditional soccer countries picked up the game and started to have strong pro leagues. In hockey, there's no Russia, Czechia, or even the Swedes

Breezy Johnson wins the women’s downhill for the USA. Another American finished fourth.  Vonn crashed out. Yea an ACL is important.

Girls play soccer all over the USA. They still play hockey in only a limited geographical area.  And a Canada has a low population. Eventually the other countries will catch up.

Around here every ice rink has multiple teams. They just rebuild our rec center to add a second rink due to demand. For other countries to catch up there need to be leagues and hockey is expensive just in terms of equipment and the need for ice. Here for profit youth sports followed by college sports solves that. I don’t see an equivalent elsewhere

Not sure why you think that.  Countries all put money into sports. How do they compete in other sports without college sports?   You think the euro countries are not putting money into skiing and skating?  Just a matter of priorities. People said they would never catch up in women’s soccer and men’s basketball. But they generally have.

It’s a shame for the other USA ladies that all the Vonn drama stole the show. Johnson was the world downhill champion in 2025 and yet you heard almost nothing about her from the media.  After this Vonn can just fade away.

Skiing and skating are barely a thing in college. Women’s soccer is benefiting from the European club infrastructure caring. Basketball is different because it’s easy to identify the really tall kid early and work with them. It’s why the small guards who would get overlooked by professional clubs in Europe still come up through EYBL (before you say SGA, he played circuit basketball in high school)

Drat, it turns out you do need an ACL to be an athlete. I was hoping the Nationals could get a refund for all those lost seasons of Wilson Ramos.

Vonn broke her leg and already underwent surgery so possibly a compound fracture. Report is that she grabbed the gate with arm and it caused her to lose her balance.

Yea I know.  I posted that this morning.  Leading up to the event no one was talking about her.  Even when she had the best training time. I have no doubt that Vonn is planning her best comeback for the 2030 games. She and Johnson have the same number of Olympic golds now.

In fact I see that you posted this morning about the Vonn injury and not the Johnson victory. The latter seemed an afterthought. It’s pretty sad that an American lady won the gold but everyone is “but Lindsey crashed”.

I mean Finland and Czechia and Sweden and Russia and Slovakia all turn out a ton of top level men’s hockey players so there is money enough in those countries.  It’s just a matter of building interest among young girls and getting the coaches. Either from North America or their own men’s programs. There is much more competition there from other winter sports but that’s true for the men also.  It’s just a matter of time. Canada has been turning out men’s and women’s hockey players without much of any college programs for a long time.

lot of Canadian women play US NCAA hockey. A lot of Euros, too. Heck, Slovenia's women's national team goalie went to Yale the tear they went to the final and lost to Ohio State.

In part, I think there's a barrier in some of these countries to thinking hockey is a women's game. It was that way in Europe in soccer for a while, and maybe even Brazil. On the other hand, the US is on its 3rd women's top flight league, I think. Until the latest incarnation, we didn't put money into our pro leagues, which allowed the EPL and other euro leagues to catch up and move past us for pro opportunities. That serves as a way for them to develop national teams. I think we still have a bigger feed due to title 9, but they are able to refine the higher level players due to a more professional program.

Man, this would have been a good spot for Old Chelsea to weigh in.

Is it girls caring or professional clubs willing to take a loss on women’s hockey? Here it’s parents willing to pay thousands to travel teams subsidizing it.
