The Nats won 66 games in 2025. They won 66 games by the end of August in 2026. The run differential has made a 231 run swing since last year, if it stands this would be one of the 20 biggest improvements by any team in the last 50 years. Watching the playoff dreams fade has been tough, but the season has been one of the great success stories for this franchise.

Even the pitching has improved, the runs per game allowed is lower than in four of the past five seasons, it just looks bad in contrast to how the offense has taken off.

This is what was projected by yahoo. I think the most generous one I saw back then was 68.5 wins. We’ve basically achieved it with one month to go. It’s progress. Just wish we had different owners.

Didn’t read that before I posted my comment. Totally agree. Not as optimistic about the future as you are but it’s progress.

The short optimistic case is that, if they can maintain an above-average offense, just getting the pitching to middling should make them an above average team. With Wood and Abrams, Lile, and most of the supporting cast, that's doable it's a lot easier to improve from awful to average than to improve from above average to excellent

If they can replicate what they did with Garcia, Young, Ruiz, and Mead, that reduces the dependency on super star players.
