5 players nusbaum talks about the most are King, Fitz-Gerald, Clemmey, Petry, and Willits, with paragraphs on Morales, Moroknek, Lyon, Cranz and Perales.

Interesting point about the leadership and brains of Petry and Fitz-Gerald. They lead the hitters meetings at Wilmington; Petry for the righties and Fitz for the lefties. Petry is a data-demander to learn tendencies of opposing pitchers.
Quote
This spring, the Nationals worked with Petry to develop a more patient approach. In April, that meant he frequently struck out looking — “which I’m OK with,” Petry said, because “I can live with someone throwing a fastball on the black.” He had a .454 on-base percentage that month. Now that he’s confident in his decisions, the walks have gone down — but the power is way, way up. He has a .629 slugging percentage in May. His .962 OPS is among the org’s best.

For Clemmey, they are getting velocity and command back by actually loosening up on the attempt to manage his delivery into something that's more repeatable. Says they've said the same thing to Irvin and Cavalli as well as across the minors, trying to get them to be more athletic in throwing.
Quote
It has helped a number of their arms add velocity across the minor leagues. For Clemmey, the athletic movement has as much to do with velocity as it does with command. It’s a small sample, but he has walked six batters over his last 17 1/3 frames. He walked 26 batters over his first 23 innings this year.

On Moroknek, Nusbaum quotes one of the old scouts who looked at him at Butler before the draft and could not believe the nats were the only team on him. Also notes Lyon has been bumped up twice this year even though he wasn't much mentioned as part of the Ferrer deal. Fro both Fitz-Gerald and Willits, Nusbaum notes they have improved on elevating contract without losing contact rates. For Fitz, they are encouraging to try to kill the ball for his first two strikes and rely on his contact skill if he gets in a 2-strike hole.

Downside for Morales boosters is they don't think he's fixed flaws like in zone whiffs, chasing, and groundball rate and will hold off on promotion until that changes.

KLaw has Willits #10, King #36 in his updated top 70. Were #53 and #94 pre season.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7459011/2026/07/23/mlb-prospects-ranking-top-70-kade-anderson-jesus-made/

Willits:
Quote
I was light on Willits last year in the draft, in large part because I didn’t expect (gesticulates wildly at the batter’s box) this. Willits went home for the offseason and put on maybe 10-15 pounds of muscle, so now he’s driving the ball far more without any loss of plate discipline or bat-to-ball skills. He’s already in High A at age 18, and continues to hit and get on base, although the four homers he hit in his first series at that level came at the bandbox in Greensboro and I don’t think that’s indicative of his actual power level. He’s a fabulous defender at short with plus range and excellent hands. Add that to what might be a .400ish OBP guy with at least serious doubles power and you have an All-Star.

King:
Quote
King hit the IL on July 1 with an oblique strain, so he could be out for a little while, but prior to that he was hitting .275/.338/.443 in Triple A, with pitchers taking advantage of his willingness to expand the zone. He has outstanding bat speed and after last year’s shenanigans he’s back in a much better hitting position. His defense at shortstop remains outstanding. Even if he’s a lower-OBP guy, which is possible if he doesn’t adjust from his college “I can hit everything!” approach, he’s still at least a regular thanks to his defense and hard contact.

Longenhagen and Gawlowski at FG published their updated, pre-trade deadlione "top 100" on Friday.
Link: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2026-pre-trade-deadline-top-100-prospects-update/

Top 6 are Made, Arias, Kade Anderson, Walker Jenkins, Max Clark, and Leo DeVires. Cue the "Why didn't we take" chorus of Crews detractors.

#7 is our Eli. 60FV.

Other Nats are Susana (#29 / 55 FV), Fitz-Gerald (#72 / 50 FV), Ford (#94 / 50), and Sykora (#108 / 50). That makes 5, with Ford likely to exceed rookie limits the rest of the season (sorry Drew, but I don't see them going back  to you splitting time with Ruiz). Cruz doesn't quite make it, and they don't like Fien as much as others.

On Willits, they say:
Quote
Willits, 18, hasn’t had a raw power breakout yet, but he’s starting to look stronger and the special bat-to-ball feel that made him last year’s first overall pick has seamlessly translated to mid-minors play.

Made is the only 65 FV. The last 2 60 FV guys, at#8 and #9, are Seth Hernandez and Thomas White (Marlins system).

For the life of me, I do not understand how Fangraphs ranks prospects. I do not understand how Sykora gets ranked so low when he has exceeded Susana already in the minors. Neither of them have pitched this year and Susana will only have a handful of innings by the end.

Anyway, I assume Hacopian takes Ford's spot

They have Hacopian #6 as a 45+, followed by 3 other 45+: Rosario, Harmon, and Sime. Kent rounds out the top 10 as a 45.

The gap between Susana and Sykora  is  based in part on their process where injured guys go to the bottom of the prospect list for their   FV grade. Susana is a 55, and Sykora is a 50. Before the injury, I think they had  Susana's slider as a 70 or 80, so that  and his velocity I think drives ther :az:

Edit before posting: currently, they list Sykora's best pitch as his fastball, which they have as a 60. his slider and splitter they have as 55s with potential of 60. Command at a 45 with a chance to max at 55. Susana has a 60 FB as well, with a potential  of 65.  The slider they have 70/80, so my memory was right (my age, I :woop: when I remember stuff). They don't like his changeup or command (both 30/45). I think it's a fair question to ask whether a guy with two wipe out pitches but Nook Lalouche command should be ranked above a guy with 3 pitches and better command, but I guess they still see him as a potential starter (you don't) and a Mason Miller floor.

Susana can't throw strikes though. I just don't understand how a guy with such terrible control can be rated so much better. Especially since Syroka was better in High A.

It's not like he's  on an island by himself on having Susana ahead  of Sykora. Baseball America has it that way. So does Todd Boss. Law, MLB Pipeline have it your  way.

To me, it's show me after the injury what you are.

It's not required to be as accurate as biathlon shooting to give you a sense of who to get excited about.

I have Dominic Smith flashbacks.   Someday thise might turn into Dylan Crews flashbacks.

But yea debating whether a guy is this position or that position seems useless.

yes,
i meant it for both of them. I'm not ready to get more hope for one or the other until they come back from injury. I think they are both MLB if healthy.

Middle of the system is night and day difference than 18 months ago.

DeBartolo and Toboni have done a hell of a lot of work restocking the system, and we still have an uberelite prospect in Willits

Pretty clear the new approach is more bites at the table rather than safer players. Not saying right or wrong, but just apparent.
