The weight gain from Hassell won’t be a big problem. Players lose weight over the course of a season.  Unless he has an eating disorder he’ll start to slim down as the hot season progresses.

Red Sox claimed the mustache man.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2026/02/red-sox-claim-mickey-gasper.html

I think Millas has an inside track to the backuo catcher slot. Butera talked him up at the Hot Stove, and the removal of Adams and Gasper from the 40 man clears competition. Tres Barrera is also not on the roster. Now if they only would clear out Ruiz...

Nats claim LHP Ken Waldichuk and DFA George Soriano, whom they recently claimed.

TalkNats notes: "Waldichuk ranks eighth in all of Minor League Baseball (min. 275.0 IP) with 13.02 strikeouts per 9.0 innings since the start of the 2019 season."

1 year, $4 million. I think this confirm it is quite unlikely that the Nats will bring in any position player free agents even to fill in holes that have no internal candidates for 2026. It's not like Hoskins is a better value at $5 million

Nationals acquire RHP reliever Andre Granillo from the Cardinals in exchange for RHP George Soriano.

We had claimed Soriano off waivers a couple of weeks ago.

Good signing. Worst case, he eats innings. Best case, trade bait at deadline.

need this. Can't really count on Gray's health, and if you could, you'd still be conceding 2 spots to 2 among Irvin, Lord, and Parker.

If they cut him? No. If ownership is suddenly willing to take that salary on as part of a package that includes prospects like Cade Obermueller, Moises Chace, and Carson DeMartini, then yea, I'd do that

Nats have opened up a $5 million lead on the Cardinals for dead last in active payroll.  The Pirates will spend 2.5x what the Nats spend this year.

Even with the $35 million hit from Strasburg this year, they rank 28th in luxury tax payroll.

Crazy that the Pirates have a better chance to retain Skenes than we would have had if we drafted him. Seriously the MLB needs to step in a force a sale.

Not sure how you got there. Pirates have 0% chance to retain Skenes
