Getting a first and third for him is impressive.

So do they trade ovi now?

I suspect either he’s privately confirmed to the team that he will head back to Russia after his contract expires this summer or the team has privately told him they won’t re-sign him. Recall a few years ago they made a commitment to him to try to keep a winning team around him while he chased Gretzky. I wonder whether, with that over, they’re entering the rebuild.

Another possibility with the Carlson trade is that they’re making room for Cole Hutson in a few weeks.

What are the conditions on the first round pick? As it stands now they are showing it conveying to the Caps but as late round pick. Anaheim is a point behind Vegas in their division with a game in hand. Weakest division in hockey.

So if they go full rebuild do they try and trade Wilson in the offseason?

Ok reading more.  If the Ducks don’t make the playoffs they can keep this year and let Caps have the first round next year.  Looks like they will make playoffs. Root for a first round exit for the Ducks.

 someone took Carlson's contract

UFA at season end...chump change left regardless of who eats it.

Caps got a conditional first rounder...great deal for them...

And Weegar got traded from Calgary...Monday's game at Cap One will be funereal.

The Caps were already discussing internally whether to bring him back next year. My understanding is a trade does not preclude that. There'll be debate on the term -- he'll want two years. But he has value.

He has a 15 team no-trade list...that could complicate matters beyond what someone may be able to offer.  I do think he'd relish playing for his hometown Leafs...

I'm trying to understand their  playoff shot. They are 4 points behind the Bruins for the last Eastern spot (2d WC), and 6 points behind 3 other teams 1st WC and 2 Metro divcision teams)? Probably prudent to pull  the plug if they got decent value back. Sounds like the Carlson deal was that.

David Kampf because deadline deals involving Czech malcontents always end well

Trotz is still laughing about the Erat trade...and who wouldn't be...

...and lest we forget that we also got 3 seasons of Michael Latta in that deal...

Caps just gave up 2 shorthanded goals on the same penalty.

What's better than 3 unanswered goals followed by 3 unanswered goals?  Well!

Didn't watch but just saw the final score.  I wonder if this is indeed the end of the road for the GR8?

There was a pulse of energy in the building every time Hutson touched the puck.  Haven't felt that in a hot minute.

I was glad Ovechkin got a goal last night. His previous two goals came against Montreal on February 28 and that was a rare game I missed because I was on the Acela back from New York and the train was delayed by police activity (had it been on time, I'd have gotten home prior to the third period). I was starting to get concerned that I might have missed the final goal of his NHL career.

You essentially have your fate in your own hands...and you crap the bed against one of the worst teams in the NHL...

Inside Out Classic.

Team is at a bit of a crossroads. They seemed to have done a good job of a retool and avoiding a complete tear down.  Lack a true 1C. And really a 1D.  Need to get a top three pick one year.  Or more. Ted won’t want to hear that of course.

Gonna guess Ovi is going to do the quiet retirement at the end of the season.
