Blame everywhere except at the top, still
I mean, Janes, Svrulga, and Goldman did a pretty good job of placing blame with ownership.

All we've heard is that Toboni is going to build a "scouting monster." That sounds an awful lot like we're going to have payroll like the Brewers, Guardians, or Rays.

Whatever it is, it has to be better than what it is now...

Maybe. Different kind of purgatory.

It's also good to have a PBO who can get through a radio interview without a million "ums" and "ahs", and endless gibberish.

As expected, DeBartolo stays, although just about all of the other remnants of Rizzo's front office were let go today.

First Sunshine post of the offseason right there.

Maybe they did. or they thought Bart could save them...

DOGE has come to Nats Park.

I've heard this number is much larger than initially thought. Easily north of 50 cuts in the Nationals organization for new president Paul Toboni, who will be busy filling all of these jobs (and finding a new manager)

More like the Grim Reaper.  Something tells me that Mini-Me is well pleased...trimming some of Rizzo's overpaid fat...this may likely have been a condition of Toboni's employment...

You’re not hitting that number with scouts and minor league staff. That means ticket reps, ground crew, marketing…

No, Toboni doesn't have purview over those positions.

Also, the Ringer did a study in 2019 that said the average number of scouts was 54.6. You factor in coaching staff, medical staff, and other assorted staff and 50 is still within the real of player development.

The idea of a top heavy front office validates a popular thought Rizzo had “his guys” and it got stale.

I still give a lot of credit to how DeBartolo navigate the draft and more importantly the deadline. If he is retained as GM, I have no qualms. Lack of announcement so far makes me think it’s a decision Toboni made on his own versus DeBartolo being someone he had to keep.

Toboni just held a media call. Per TalkNats he laid out the roles of his assistant GMs:
Quote
Devin Pearson will oversee the Nats player development operation.

Justin Horowitz will oversee acquisitions (amateur scouting, trades, international scouting).

Mike DeBartolo will also oversee baseball operations.

No plans at the moment to hire a single GM.

Said he and Butera are working on hiring a coaching staff and that MLB experience was not a requirement.

No way to judge Peasron and Horowitz. Got to trust Toboni on them. For DeBartolo, on baseball ops, he has had to run a draft and a trade deadline, so seems like he is actually a good selection to keep for that more focused rule.

I still would like to see a CEO or some sort of top business exec brought in.

Yes, fair and accurate. I wouldn't expect major moves or investment into the roster; gotta evaluate and rebuild everything in the image they want.

Reasonable. Probably fair on Gore.

I think the most important thing this offseason is building a club more attentive to the fundamentals. We've been the statistically worst defensive team in baseball since 2020. Have to be the most sloppy on the bases.

Build an organization where sloppy play is allowed and this is what you get. I blame some of our pitching struggles on them getting zero help from the guys behind them.

They were bad in the minors and the only people to blame are the managers and coaches who manned our minor league teams.

This. I went to a number of games at Harrisburg this year. It was eye opening to see how much better most of the visiting teams were at basic fundamentals than the Senators were.

We need to have a consistent emphasis on fundamentals starting from the first day a player walk into DSL or FCL ball, all the way up the minors. I don’t care how far you can hit a ball. It’s no good if you can’t hit the cut off man, you throw to the wrong base, or you are constantly TOOTBLANed.
