Welp premiere league is back.  And so is Sunderland.  Good luck to them.

Do we need a new thread?

On our way home from Audi Field. United beat Club América 3–1. First goal was on a nice bicycle kick. And the visitors didn’t really score—theirs came on an own goal.

Fun night in a bad season.

Spurs crushed West Ham 3-0. And the Lewis family removed Daniel Levy after almost 25 years, saying they wanted more wins.

Looks like we use the start of the Premier League as the point at which we start a new annual soccer thread. Idk if we'll set up a world cup thread separately

I guess the British, at least soccer fans, are gullible. Last night, a London newspaper called The Sun, reported that an American tech entrepreneur named Brooklyn Earick had, with his consortium, offered about £4.5 billion for the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Spurs fans were shocked. They have spent all day screaming about Americans taking over another Pemier League team.

"A US consortium has launched a world record £4.5 BILLION takeover bid for Tottenham".  And, no, that is not London's new billionaire, Dan Snyder. The Sun helpfully added that Mr. Earrick has money from NFL investers. Ouch! Read their breathless article here:

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/36834706/tottenham-takeover-brooklyn-earick/

The owners of Tottenham announced that the team is not for sale.

I did a quick search for "Brroklyn Earrick", finding a LinkedIn profile and a mention on something called "Pitchbook". Both said that he was CEO of technology, music, and sports company called "Redacted RnD". in Singapore. Redactled? Hmm. Googled them, and got "Error 404". Curious.

Looked for a Wikipedia entry for this Earick guy, and found there is none. A tech billionaire without even a Wiki bio?

Kept searching, and did find a PDF of an article in Columbus Magazine ("Cmag.com") that supposedly was an interview with him from 2011 talking about his world-wide popularity as a DJ. The magazine seems not to exist and never to have existed.

A reporter from Yahoo had also been searching. I concluded that this is a trans-Atlantic puiblicity joke, but Dustin George Miller wont say what I am thinking (Maybe an elaborate hoax to demonstrate the gullibility of London tabloids?). REad his article.

Brendon Aaronson looks good for Leeds today.  Goal and now just hit a crossbar after a great run.

I thought people read the Sun so they could see Samantha Fox’s boobs.

Brentford got absolutely skrude by the refs in a home match vs Liverpool. They jumped to a 2-0 lead, which is news enough. At the end of the half, the sideline guts gave 3 minutes stoppage time. The match went beyond 3 minutes, but the ref held off blowing his whistle. 2 more minutes passed before Liverpool attacked and scored. I get They sometimes hold off blowing a whistle if it's in the middle of an attack, but Liverpool just held the ball at midfield for at least a minute.

Winter soccer anyone?

https://www.si.com/soccer/mls-winter-soccer-canadian-premier-league-final-insane-bicycle-kick-in-blizzard

Reminds me of the 2013 World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica in the snowstorm. The Costa Ricans made no protest at the time of the game and then expressed outrage about the conditions after they lost. FIFA quite rightly rejected their complaints because they didn't protest promptly at the time of the game.

ESPN reports that MLS Season Pass will no longer be an extra-cost subscription within Apple TV—it’ll now be included in the Apple TV+ subscription, same as F1 will be. What would be nice would be if they’d expand the audio option to allow you to use either team’s radio feed, instead of just the home team. Dave Johnson’s commentary is a lot better than Apple’s play-by-play.

I had three free months of Apple TV from a phone purchase. Could not get it to work properly with my Roku.  Or laptop.  Read that others have similar issues.  I just gave up. And I have a MacBook so you would think it would be simple.

Yes - I thought it was a great draw, for Team USA, whilst watching. The Global Powerhouse look to be in the Pathway Of Death - the group could have been kinder, but isn't insurmountable; however, they would have to defeat Mexico and Brazil to get a final versus France or Spain. Can't see it.... :(

My betting app has them as second favorite.  Behind Spain.  Truly the Global Powerhouse.

The rest of the group is probably looking at the US thinking the same thing

Crystal Palace in fourth place in the PL table.  Can they keep it up?  Unfamiliar ground.

They have benn crushed in the last two games. Not enough top players to handle the Premier League plus Europe plus the Carabao Cup, with the FA Cup about to start. Look at their game on Thursday against Spurs. Tottenham has been dismal under a new coach, even though the team spends loads...on mediocre players. ASnd the new coach never plays the same stars. And never the same style.

Palace has a great coach. If Josh Harris and Woody Johnson (!) spend their money, Palace could fly higher.
