Project 2030
« on: July 31, 2025, 10:59:19 am »
Mike DeBartolo has already brought in five teens via the draft and trades. When is he expecting for the Nats to be contending again?

Browm Martinez 18
Ronny Cruz 18
Landon Harmon 18
Coy James 18
Eli Willits 17

Even if you think Willits will be as quick to the majors as he says he'll be (before he turns 20), the high schoolers, plus Dickerson, Sykora, and maybe Angel Feliz all look like 2028-30 as the time they'll be in the majors.  That overlaps with Wood, Crews, and perhaps House as the vets.

Susana, if he stays healthy, should be a 2026 arrival so figure him for that timeframe too.

Draft for talent, not for timeline.

Debartolo nor the Lerners will be a part of this organization by 2030. He's just dumping any kind of salary currently on the roster at the behest of an ownership group that doesn't want to spend a dime.

I'm not critiquing the individual moves, just pointing out a trend. DeBartolo must believe in his job security.

So far, I've liked his moves. I liked the draft, I've liked all these trades. I only want him back if layered over, but no complaints so far from me.

it would be nice to hear what DeBartolo's vision is, i'm sure he'll share with the Lerners as he seeks the permanent role.

One note from a Twitter user is that the team could be signing guys with longer time lines due to the possible strike.

actually, if he arrives 2026, that's a little early if you view the high schoolers as the next core.

Did that comment about delaying the next World Series until there is a new resident in the White House get deleted? I feel that TDS is a strong possibility.

He has yet to prove himself above High A, that might be optimistic.

I also think there's an inverse relationship to how much we discuss pitchers as minor leaguers and their MLB impact.  Call it the Brad Lord effect.

not deleted. Moved to Politics. If you want to discuss your theory about politics impacting the sale of the team or moves by the GM, explain it more fully there.

Lord was discussed plenty last year. Folks were calling for him to be up when he was still in AA.

There's also a farm system that really needs to be rebuilt bottom up and with actual baseball skills, not the man crush traits T. Rizzo loved.   But also like how DeBartolo has gone for patient hitters with his high minors trades.  It's crazy how many times the opposing pitcher has thrown 25-50% fewer pitches than the Nat pitcher after 3 or 4 innings.  I don't expect a winning record next year, but it will be encouraging if the team isn't Keiberting pitches softly to infielders most of the game.

I was, but he never got the attention Cavalli, Henry, Susana, Syroka, Rutledge, etc got.

he emerged quickly, which is why there wasn't a lot of talk. Most of the guys you mention have been in the org a lot longer. Cavalli, Henry, Susana, and even Rutledge were ranked highly by the FGs, BBA, BPs, and prospect hounds earlier, so folks kept talking about them even after the bloom (or the arm) fell off

Yet it's likely the most realistic thread on the board...

This thread is a sunshine walk on Lollipop Lane compared to the Cavalli thread.   Five years of hope for a now 27 year old with a 5.90 ERA in AAA, and who's almost arb eligible.

My guess is he's Moneyball and Tyrannosaurus Rizzo is the old guys looking for players who fit well into their jeans, which might actually bring this org into the 21st century.  He's going to push for investments in technology, and if he's successful, Mini Me will allow him to be the first team employee to buy a laptop that was manufactured after the last WS win.

Never.

The Nats will never be competitive so long as the Lerners own the team.
