Swing-off
« on: July 16, 2025, 09:29:06 am »
So I got home late last night and I turned on my TV just after 11:00 expecting the ASG to be over but they were just starting the swing-off. It took me a minute to realize what was going on and my initial reaction is I think I kind of like it.

Like some of you, I was at the 18-inning NLDS game in 2014. I think it’s safe to say we’ll never see another game go that long again. I really hate the free runner rule and my position has always been that the free runner should start in the 12th inning. Now the talking heads are debating if the swing-off should replace extra innings.

My proposal:

10th inning - played as normal
11th inning - each team gets free runner on 2nd
If game is still tied, go to a swing-off.

Just curious to hear people's thoughts.

10th as normal
11th as swing off

Much better than the runner at 2nd.

I missed the swing off. Was it just HR derby?

Basically. Three rounds of head-to-head, each player got three swings.

Actually I like that idea better now that I think about it.

This would be bad for Jacob Young.

It's fun for exhibition games, but baseball isn't just homer ball.

Pick 3 players for each team. They alternate teams and each player gets three swings each. So each team gets 9 swings total. You use your own BP pitcher. Whoever is ahead wins the game. NL won 4-3 and Schwarber went 3-4 on his swings.

The reason Ohtani or Judge didn’t participate is because they had already showered and gone home.

I’m all for this for regular season games.  Hockey isn’t just penalty shots.  But if OT hasn’t decided a winner, I’m all for a shootout.  It’s entertaining and gets the game over quicker. And as others have said, it’s better than the zombie runner.

I just disagree that it's better than the zombie runner, and I'm no fan of the zombie runner. Penalty shots already exist in hockey outside of shootouts.

Home run derbies are not part of actual baseball games. A big part of my objection is that you're putting a coach in to throw the best meatballs he can.  That coach's skill at throwing meatballs is a big part of deciding a game in which he is now essentially playing.

It’s slo-pitch which is fine if you’re sponsored by Howard’s Furniture.

I don't know how many uniformed players and coaches ended up on each team, but it would seem it was more than the regular season roster.  Guessing they actually asked players to hit the showers, and hit the road, when they were thru playing so that there was more room for everyone at the end of the game...just a guess...

Also guessing Judge and Ohtani knew they weren't going to be named the game MVP...

Yeah, and I don't really begrudge these guys getting a jump on salvaging some semblance of a break. I bet MLB encourages it. in an effort to get the stars to participate.

The Rosters are 34 players per league. I also think there are more coaches than normal.

Swing-off: each team gets one swing from all nine players in the lineup when the game is called. Imitate the soccer shoot-out.

Then I guess each league should send the best BP coach to the ASG

Great idea, or just go with the Bananas' scoring system where you compete on an inning-by-inning basis.
