A manager can never ever blame his players for failure to the media. Dave Martinez should’ve been fired the day after or sooner for blaming his players for failure. if you’re stupid enough for saying such a thing you should be fired for that alone - stupidity.
Our young players need direction not a target put on their back by their leaders. Seriously doubt Mark Lerner will lead us out of this hole, but Martinez absolutely had to go.

Multiple things can be true at the same time, here.  Rizzo and Davey had no real future with this team - true.  Mark Lerner is a complete assclown and couldn't be trusted to order an Uber - true.

It's a messy situation, but I feel like it boils down to this:

-Rizzo turned out to be a so-so GM who was mediocre at drafting and lucked into generational talents from 2009 to 2011
-Davey turned out to be a lousy manager who rode the wave of a short-lived era of good feelings in 2019
-Davey probably should have been fired before this season because of the way the team limped down the stretch in 2024 (if not after the 107-loss campaign), and DEFINITELY should have been fired immediately after the "it's on the players" comments
-Rizzo, like Davey, probably should have been let go before this season as well
-Letting go of them is not a bad decision, but the timing is ludicrous
-Rizzo is showing some of his notorious stubborn idiocy in standing beside Davey
-It may be a good thing that Rizzo isn't overseeing the draft, but the new regime will have little time to prepare because of said insane timing, and anyway...
-Whichever new regime is put in place is ultimately selected by Mark Lerner, which is a. the real problem here, and b. unfortunate because...
-Mark Lerner freaking sucks (for pretty much every reason stated in this thread)

If there were ever two comments here I wish I could have back, it's the comments I made some time after the World Series win whereby I praised both Davey and the Lerner family.  I tried to have an "All's Well That Ends Well" mentality, but time just completely and utterly exposed the folly in that line of thinking.

I'm surprised so many people are saying this.  Remember that Manny freaking Acta somehow got hired again to manage a team.  He may not have made the dumb comments Davey made, but he also never came close to sniffing the playoffs and was so obviously a complete dipcrap.

How many of his picks didn't work? I am asking because I don't know. The Padres paid a steep price to rent Soto and looks great. But the Padres also contend much more often recently than we do.

He’s going nowhere.  We’re seeing things from the low expectations perspective of Nats fans.  He added to the dysfunctional culture with his play the contract nonsense and horrible player development.  Teams that care about performance, not dysfunctional defensiveness, will go nowhere near him.
