It's only for $32MM, so $5.33MM AAV.  That's a bargain for a player of his caliber...

If he plays well for 4 years, they can buyout the last at 67% of value and still be ahead of the game.  If he's still playing well...that's a bonus...

I assume the idea was essentially to defer salary to keep AAV low. They resigned two other core pieces as well.

Nate Schmidt to Utah on a 3 year deal, and Tiger to Ottawa on a 1 year deal...

Honestly, I thought Eller was done, and this deal for Schmidt reminds me of the 3 year deal Jay Beagle got from Vancouver in 2018...

The Rat returns to Beantown tonight...16 years to the day he made his NHL debut...

Switching over from the Caps game to see the reception he gets...should be good...he didn't leave...he was traded.  Unlike a certain Nat that routinely gets hate when he visits the District...

EDIT:

Boston did a great job welcoming him back...the guy couldn't control his tears...and the more he cried the more the crowd cheered.

He’s a dirty little POS no matter how you cut it.
Don’t show me that jersey JCA.

I don't recall him as being dirty, rather a weird wuss, as Davey Johnson would say about Joe Maddon...

I kinda like him now that he's not a Bruin...and it's clear from what I've heard that his teammates and former teammates all love him.

He's undeniably a damned good hockey player...and he showed that again last night...

hartford is a weird market because you have about five 150,000+  cities within an hour drive - Hartford, New Haven, Springfield, Bridgeport, and Worcester, not to mention Waterbury. Worcester will always be Boston-oriented, but otherwise those cities would look to Hartford. Generally less wealthy cities, but with hockey interest. For a long time, the Whalers were pretty viable.

that's because  they are one of the great unis in sports. I'd put them up there with the Canadiens in hockey. Bold colors and simple design. Frankly, better than the variants of black and yellow or most of the predominantly blue unis. Not busy like some of the more recent logos.

Meh...those won't win him a Lady Bing, but didn't see any suspension worthy stuff in there.

Like I said...now that he's out of Boston, I'm kinda rootin' for the little whack job.  The change in environment seems to have had a positive impact on his character...

Marchand would do the occasional stupid retaliatory cheap shot. The licking stuff was just "creative." That said, his younger self drew more attention to his over the line moves later on than maybe he deserved. This is a town where Tom Wilson plays. He goes through the same thing in terms of rep.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6857342/2025/12/09/most-punchable-nhl-player-poll-cousins-makar-marchand/

1) Nick Cousins (24.3%)
2) Brad Marchand (19.6%)
3) Mattthew Tkachuk (10.3%)

Rest are below 5%

On Cousins:
Quote
"I have a deep respect for players who have an ability to get under people's skin," he said. "I like those guys. For me, the top is Nick Cousins. Everybody hates this guy in the league, but when you play with him, he's one of the best teammates you could ask for. The thing about Cousins is he literally made a career out of it. Brad Marchand could just play. Nick Cousins isn't that good of a player, but he's confident all the time. That's a f---ing hard thing to do. 'I might be minus-4 tonight and turn 12 pucks over, but I'm still going to chirp you the whole game.' That's next level."
