Bowden has a post in the Athletic with deadline deal suggestions. One he pitches is the Nats sending Finnegan to the Giants for Joe Whitman and Jacob Bresnahan, both LH starting pitching prospects. Seems like a big price for the Giants to pay.

Quote
In return, the Nationals would acquire two left-handed starting pitching prospects. Whitman, 23, has logged a 5.56 ERA over 13 starts with 62 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings this season at Double A. Bresnahan, 19, has a 3.33 ERA with 59 strikeouts over 46 innings in Low A. The Athletic’s Keith Law ranked Whitman and Bresnahan fifth and 14th, respectively, in the Giants’ farm system earlier this year.

looking at the season stats, it looks like Whitman might be a sell high candidate who may take a hit as a prospect in a mid-season rerank. Sort of like Lara is going to take a hit. Bresnahan maybe far from the majors. The price seems high, but not as ridiculous as other things Bowden spouts.

Why do the Giants need a reliever? They have the best bullpen in baseball

It won't happen.  Both have some Rizzo man crush characteristics, but it's way too much to give up for half a season of Kyle Finnegan, especially for the team that already has the best bullpen ERA in MLB.

Bowden just says it would give them depth.

yes, it struck me still as a lot even if Whitman has taken a step back. Do see any useful pieces on the Nats for SF perhaps as a sweetener or an alternative?

Whitman's been unlucky with BABIP, doubt he goes.  The Giants don't have a lot of bats to give up besides Bryce Eldridge, who's obviously not going anywhere.  But most of the AAA rotation is AAAA starters who could actually fit into the Nats bullpen, and would be cheaper than Finnegan.  Trent Harris or Trevor McDonald could be possibilities.

They don't. They need bats, they're not a sensible landing spot for Finnegan.

The last person...well, one of the last...that I would give any credibility to regarding most anything baseball related is Bowden...

He's still the expert on how to ride a Segway around the field during Spring Training.

If Soroka can stay healthy, he could bring a pretty surprising haul. Could even be a bit more than what the Astros gave up for Yusei Kikuchi last year.

Might be some opportunity to take advantage of the Mets

I agree about Soroka being attractive. A team with a bullpen that can cover 4 innings might like what he's been doing for 5 innings. It only really takes an average bullpen to make use of him as a very good#4 or #5, then he can go to the bullpen for the playoffs.

Do we move Luis Garcia? It's pretty obvious he needs a team that will motivate him if he wants to be an everyday second baseman. For now, they either put up with terrible defense or leverage him as a DH against RHP?

Garcia would be a gutsy move.

I think Call gets moved at 4th OF price, Finnegan becomes a set up guy for someone else, and Bell goes someplace looking for a vet bat. Soroka will have a market.

Finnegan gets moved, Ferrer gets a shot at closing.

With Call, I think they go with Hassell or Lile, Young, Wood,  and Crews. No room for Call.

It would save a couple million Lernerbucks this year, and probably 6-7 million next year.  Not sure he's a starter on many other teams though, especially a contender.

I just dont see where Garcia has a spot on this roster in the future. Abrams is better, defensively, but he still needs to move to 2B. Garcia seems more suited towards being a platoon DH

As well as he plays, I've noticed Call still has a bit of a limp. That he's a gamer who plays through injury is a fine testament to his character, but I imagine team scouts might notice, which might affect his trade value.

There is no universe where Garcia is worth $6-7MM...not to this team anyway...

He's making 4.5m this year in his first year of arb.  He's a Super 2, so he's got three more arb years left.

Find a landing spot for him elsewhere...

That's what they're paying the DH to be a worse hitter. Team will easily pick up that.

How much do you think control of Garcia through another 2-3 years is valuable if he's up to $6 million in his 2d year of arb?

Decent. But we would have gotten way more if we had traded him this offseason. He needs to go to a team that will stay on him and make him work to improve his fielding. A team like the Yankees or Astros would work nicely. He'd be a solid 6/7 hole hitter in those lineups
