I’d talk to Daniel Murphy.
If you can't get Kevin Long, then may as well get a prized pupil.

Long isn't going anywhere to be a hitting coach

Not sure a successful major leaguer would want to travel away from family for whatever a coaching job pays. Doolittle seems unusual.

I mean, a team with a proper ownership group could probably get Long as the bench coach or manager. But ... yeah ...

Gore and Susana down with injury.  You can’t make this stuff up.

Susana not a surprise, that UCL sprain earlier this year could have been a precursor to Tommy John.

Today’s loss will be the 8th in a row. All we need to break our record is 4 more. I know we can do it. C’mon guys don’t disappoint the fan base.

If it weren't for all these losing streaks we'd be a pretty mediocre team...

Andrew Golden has joined the LoD:
Quote
August is over. Washington finished with a 6.31 ERA, the worst team ERA in a month in Nationals history.

The Nationals allowed 53 home runs this month. For comparison, as an offense, they have only hit 41 home runs over the last two months.

It is painfully obvious players have tuned out Hickey. He should have been gone. Doolittle with him. Let Narron close out season.

there's also the distinct possibility that our pitchers just aren't very good.

A little of both.  Hickey's approach has never worked, it's been brutally high ERAs and P/IPs since he got here in '21.

He left before a manager was hired as he was a candidate or being mentioned as one here.

He was on Davey's crew through 2021. He left because ownership didn't want to spend money on coaches.

What I think is a little different about this team than other teams after the 2021 selloff is that there's much more disappointment and even disgust with the performance. Disappointment at the step back of players like LGJr., Young, Irvin, and Parker, disappointment at players like Crews and House failure to get better results (even I'm tired of pointing to the statcast expected average, slugging, and wOBA), and disappointment at the lack of a rebound from others like Ruiz. You can add disappointment in the recognition that the reboot / rebuild was a failure - a near total failure but for the talent Rizzo extracted for one of the 2-3 hall of famers he dealt.

What's a little different is the disgust when the same mistakes get made over and over again in baserunning and throwing to the right base. Disgust at the mishandling of the catching situation, which certainly looks like the guy with the biggest contract gets the 80% of the playing time. Players like Lowe evoked a mix of disappointment / disgust from different fans (I'm in the disappointment camp, but there's a sizeable disgust group that thought he he didn't care about his shape and performance). Finally, disgust at the lack of commitment from the ownership group. As my signature line says, WNFF cares more about thread titles than the Lerners care about the team's performance.

Nineteen in a row is the worst Washington Nats baseball streak. Senators, 1959. But that team seemed more likely to win than this woe-begone spiritless bunch.

Details: 63-91, 41%. No way this 2025 bynch wins 63 games. See Baseball Ref for that team: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/WSH/1959.shtml

I'll add the Lile baserunning play Sunday kind of epitomizes the disgust point. Lile probably is the most pleasant and unexpected positive on the team this year, but the play yesterday was just so bad in terms of score, game situation, and use of information that it needs to be memorialized in the LOD thread.

The obvious is that Lile's run would have been only the 6th run when the important run is the 7th. The win expectancy from 1st and 3rd, 1 out, down 3, bottom of the 9th, is roughly 10%. The win expectancy when it is 2 outs, runner on 3rd, down 3 is 1.6%.
https://gregstoll.com/~gregstoll/baseball/stats.html#H.-3.9.2.5.0.0
The win expectancy when it is 2d and 3d, 1  out, down 3 (that is, if Lile is successful) is only 0.3% higher than 1st and 3rd, 1 out, down 3.  Essentially, the Nats gambled a .03% improvement against a ~8.5% loss.  I think at the time the announcer said something like you can't go unless you are sure to make it. It's worse than that. you can't go even if you are sure because judgment is fallible.

That's just the pure numbers side. Watching the replay, Pereira cuts the ball off, wheels,  and makes an accurate throw to 2d. It was a good play, but Pereira is probably about an average outfielder and they make those plays some of the time. There's no chance that the ball was going to make it to the wall. Josh Lowe is behind Pereira when he cuts it off. Lile is fast, so maybe it's one of those plays where the execution has to be so right that you it's going to work more often than not, but that can't be the standard in that game situation.

I have to wonder what the Nats scouting understood about Pereira and Lowe's defense and how that was communicated to Parra and to the players. Did Lile just blow through a stop? I didn't see what signal Parra was giving. If it were an isolated mistake, then stuff happens. But to have these dumb baserunning plays happen so often, you can see where disgust comes from.

I’m mentally preparing myself for Parra to be retained. I like legacy hires in college sports, not in franchise sports.
