Or the Senators...a traditional name for Washington's professional baseball team. Nobody knows why, but Washingtonians persisted in calling the team "Senators", even when the official name was "Nationals". I grew up calling them "Senators", and baseball cards seemed to alternate between Senators and Nationals. Hence "Nats".
Is that confusing? Imagine me, at six years old, hearing Bob Wolf, the teams broadcaster, welcoming us to "Your Washington Nationals", and then in the late 1950s, "Your Washington Senators".
