Jose Valdevielso is reported to have died
« on: March 08, 2025, 09:36:19 pm »

The Washington Baseball History site has reported that Jose Valdivielso has died, leaving only about seven original Nats. Valdy was a good fielding but light hitting SS for the 1950s Nationals / Senators. He made the trip with the Calvin Griffith team out to Minneapolis in 1961, but was sent down in 1962, and retired from the White Sox AAA team in 1964. Baseball Ref does not mention Valdivielso's death, so...

Valdy was a slick fielder, though.

He should be remembered as part of the only all-Cuban triple play in MLB history: Pete Ramos to Valdy and to Julio Becquer on July 23, 1960. https://dcbaseballhistory.com/2024/07/this-date-in-washington-senators-history-the-all-cuban-triple-play/

In the triple play, Whitey Herzog was the hitter.

Quote
José Valdivielso, a native of Matanzas, Cuba who played for the Washington Nationals/Minnesota Twins from 1955-1961, died on March 4 at age 90. An infielder, Valdivielso was part of the only all-Cuban triple play in MLB history, combining with Camilo Pascual and Julio Bécquer to erase Whitey Herzog and a pair of Kansas City Athletics baserunners.

In the triple play, Whitey Herzog was the hitter.

Indeed, he was. And Herzog came up with the Nats in 1956.
