marlins sweep the yankees.
and trolled them by playing Sweet Caroline in the 9th
don't look now, but the Sox are a game and a half up on them and are 1st wild card. The BJs are only 3 games ahead of Boston.
Dan Szymborski ran a before and after the July deals ZiPS season simulation and found that the Red Sox improved their odds of making the post-season by the 3rd greatest amount, roughly 3.5%, as a result of their roster changes, behind only Seattle and SD. It's kind of surprising, but Matz in the pen and May in the rotation are so much better than the players they are replacing even though they themselves are nowhere near the best players move in July. That, and the fact that teams like the Mets, Yankees, Astros, and Phillies already had such high likelihood of making the post-season that even the higher profile improvements they made did not materially move the odds. The Sox only moved from about 56+% to 60%, but that was more than the NYY's move from 91% to 91+%. It's just an interesting take on the deadline moves because the Sox were criticized for not landing higher profile player like O'Hearn or Kelly when they had ample prospects to offer.
I still wonder if they'll put in a claim for Bell if he gets waived. IDK if the Nats push back a decision on that move until they've seen more of Crews and Franklin in the minors.
