Crash at DCA
« on: January 29, 2025, 09:36:08 pm »
An AA regional jet approaching from Wichita has collided with a helicopter near DCA. Video shows the collision followed by an explosion. Some reports say it was a police helicopter, others say it was a helicopter like the ones used for Marine One.

Just flew out of there yesterday. Don’t want to fly in or out at night. I know it could happen day but seems less chance.

It's hard to imagine a military aircraft could cross that airspace without any careful thought of commercial air traffic.

From what I’m reading it’s common for the military helicopters to be flying around there. Seems less than optimal.

warner and kaine put out a statement last year complaining about congestion around the airport and an understaffed atc in opposition to expanded flights at the airport.

all just speculation at this point, but in reading the aviation thread on reddit some are suggesting that it could have confused the AA flight with another CRJ behind it, or that it could have had its nose up and not seen the CRJ. The NTSB will figure it out in due time.

For sure and then I will impatiently wait for Air Disasters to cover it and explain it all to me.

ATC data shows the helicopter was 100-150’ above its allowable altitude of 200’

NYT reports tonight that the helicopter may have deviated from its approved flight path.

Quote
Details about the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter’s final location indicated that it was not on its approved route and flying higher above the ground as it traversed the busy airspace just outside the nation’s capital, according to four people briefed on the matter but not authorized to speak publicly.

The Army Black Hawk helicopter was supposed to be flying in a different location and lower to the ground as it traversed the busy Reagan National airspace, the people said.

Also from the NYT story tonight:
Quote
The internal F.A.A. report, which was reviewed by The New York Times, said the controller who was handling helicopters in the airport’s vicinity on Wednesday night was also instructing planes that were landing and departing from its runways — jobs typically assigned to two different controllers. A supervisor combined those duties sometime before 9:30 p.m. and allowed one controller to leave, according to a person briefed on the staffing, who was not authorized to speak publicly

I broke out most of the discussion of political aspects of the crash into "politics." I don't consider the last post regarding the flight path of the helicopter and a non-political person deciding to send  home the second controller early to be political. Just

Will add that the Boston Skating Club, which historically is one of the cores of the US skating program, lost multiple members in a plane crash going t the worlds in 1961

It's probably best if we suspend all attempts at communicating for a while, since toothpaste, showering, and caustic cleaning agents are all political in these mad times

I turned on the tv and saw Nancy Kerrigan crying. Deja vu all over again.
