Two big planters on our deck fell over. But at least the table stayed upright. It flipped over during a storm in May.

No power outage so far, at least, other than it blinking on and off briefly three times shortly before I signed off work.

let myself get psyched out about the incoming rainstorm and scooted home before 2 rather walk around Pentagon City / Crystal City.

We're expecting UPS to deliver a 56-pound package. I decided to go move the car out of the garage and park it around the corner because I'm certain the delivery will come when it's pouring down rain, so I figure it's easiest to have the garage empty so we can put up the door and have him put the box in there.

Sun came out just as we drove into the parking area.  Lawn was nearly empty upon our arrival, had our pick of places to plop.

Wife and I each had these foldable picnic blankets with waterproof liner on underside and non-slip blanket top, so we were set.  No rain the entire night.  Emmylou Harris with band was first, Graham Nash with band next.  Graham really seemed to enjoy his set, 3 encores including Teach Your Children and Woodstock, really great show.

Tropical weather guys are freaking out over Melissa, with some models showing it could reach near 200mph wind speeds and rival Wilma as the strongest storm ever recorded. Current guidance still has it tracking just to the east of Florida, but it keeps shifting West. Jamaica is going to get several feet of rain at a minimum.

Way too early on Melissa's track. Some models have it heading west to Honduras

Melissa expected to hit Jamaica as a Cat-5 with maximum sustained winds of around 160mph. It is going to be catastrophic.

ugh that poor little island :(
The Navy flew like 300+ non-essential personnel from Gitmo to NAS Pensacola to get them out of harm's way, including their many many cats and dogs which have to kept apparently in quarantine. The USO put out an emergency ask for donations of food and beds and toys and such and within a few hours had to tell people to stop bringing things because the response had been so great, kind of nice to remember people are basically good at heart most of the time.
*correction - over 1,000 people and over 300 pets!

185mph sustained, gusts in the 220s, 892mb of pressure, Tied for 3rd strongest storm ever. It's the strongest storm ever at time of landfall in the Atlantic.

hoping we divert some of our Caribbean fleet to humanitarian relief after this. The Ford could supply a heck of a lot of desalinated water and some helicopters, and the assault ship has tremendous assets like helicopters and other assault equipment that can be used for relief.
