Nats chose to sell them before they chose other teams. Turner was stunned when he was traded.
He was given a contract offer. He could have stayed here.

Not a serious one.

"One of those offers was in the neighborhood of six years and $100 million, according to multiple people with knowledge of past discussions. But after the New York Mets signed shortstop Francisco Lindor for 10 years and $341 million in the spring of 2021, Turner’s agents wanted a similar deal for their client."

Turner signed for 11 years at $300 million. That was probably fair market value, or $27 million a year. Too high, when all of those eleven years will be after he turned 30, and most after he turns 33. No reasonable way the Nats would have matched that.

Currently hitting .230 with 9 homers and 27 RBIs, and an OPS of .776. Maybe Soto will someday be known as "Some guy traded for James Wood". Of course, I should admit that I despise the Mets.

that is the craziest stat in baseball history.  Somewhere there's someone who put $1k on Soto to lead the NL in SBs who is buying himself a new home now.

Doesn't Soto have an opt-out in the 5th year of this deal?

Yep. But the Mets can void it if they increase his salary by $4M a year.

Starting in 2026 or after that 5th year...

So Soto should have stayed with the Yankees for less $ so he could not miss the playoffs one year.  Maybe he should have stayed with the Nats so he could miss every year.   :hysterical:

Eh, it was a one year, 24 million dollar option. He will be back.

I dunno.  If he could get a multi year deal at even lower salary it would make sense.  Not sure who wants him that much.

Soto stole 38 bases while getting caught 4 times.
Jacob Young stole 15 bases while getting caught 11 times.

Soto had a sprint speed of 25.8fps.
Young came in at 29.6.

When Yan Gomez retired he had a sprint speed of 26.4.

We need the Mets guy.

As a team, 147 stolen bases and only 18 caught stealing. By far the best in baseball.

Tough to hire the baserunning coach from a division rival

Who's the Mariners baserunning coach? Probably a super talented guy we'd value if he had been in Washington, D.C.

https://babylonbee.com/news/smart-this-man-joined-the-mets-so-he-could-get-whole-october-off-every-year

Quote
NEW YORK, NY — In a move experts now hail as one of the more shrewd decisions made in the professional sports world in the last several years, star baseball player Juan Soto revealed that he joined the Mets so he could get the entire month of October off every year.

Soto, who signed a 15-year, $756 million contract with the Mets before the 2025 season, narrowly avoided having to spend the month of October working, but managed to help his team complete a shocking late-season collapse that kept the club out of the playoffs and gave them the next month off.

"This is what I had in mind all along," Soto said after the Mets were officially eliminated from postseason play. "It was pretty touch-and-go there for a while. It looked like we might end up having to keep playing past the end of the regular season. Thankfully, the plan I had when I signed to play here came to fruition, and we just barely squeaked into having October off. Can't wait to get home."

The Mets organization praised Soto for his foresight. "He had a vision for what he expected when he signed with our club," said Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. "We weren't the only team that wanted Juan, but he felt he had the best chance of sitting at home every October if he joined our team. We're happy to have him here. Through September of every season, at least."

At publishing time, Soto said he hoped that the Mets would spend the offseason looking to make key acquisitions that could help the team almost, but not quite, contend for the postseason in 2026.
