Guess 38 saves doesn't mean crap.

Wow. I suppose at $8 million he's priced higher thanhis market value. That said, 5 years and a pile of saves, plus classic dad jokes, made a mark here.

I mean, 10 million gets you a decent reliever. If you believe Rizzo is actually allowed to spend

LAC
more like no sentimental signings. It's only LAC if he tops $8 million this year.

Interesting to compare what we were willing to pay for Will Harris before we started the tank to what we are not willing to pay now.

Either this is signaling something good, or something very bad. Honestly not sure what to think at this point.

Is it possible Finnegan's blew out his arm and the Nats don't want to pay him 8 million to rehab?

Dumbest move in franchise history, and a real low point for a cheap owner

That thought crossed my mind. If his arm/shoulder were the cause of the downturn in performance and it was discovered after the season he needs surgery, no reason to keep him to rehab for a season then lose him to FA.

Don’t want to hope finnegan is hurt but that’s a reasonable explanation.

So Louis Garcia Jr is now our longest tenured player.

TalkNats:
Quote
Source: The Nats thought they were closing in on a deal with Kyle Finnegan that stalled, and the team was not willing to tender him a deal without a firm contract in place. If they tendered Finnegan today without a firm contract in place, it could have ended in an arbitration hearing and potentially pay what
@mlbtraderumors was estimating at $8.6 million.

Talknats makes some sense. I don't think the idea that he's hurt makes sense because Morosi was saying they were shopping him. Shopping damaged goods is bad for the team's rep and frankly not something Rizzo has done.

I buy that $8.1 or $8.6 million is just too much for Finnegan. I hope they negotiate something closer to 2 years and an option, maybe $5-5 with an option for $8 with a $2 million buy out.

LAC

I’m expecting that they’ll spend somewhere else this offseason, but this was yet another classless move by this org

Possibly they were freeing up money to sign a real free agent but even if that was the case this is a cheap move by the organization. If they don't commit real money to a free agent or two that will make a big difference the Lerners really need to sell the team. I think Rainey makes even less sense because he seemed like he was making progress towards the end of the year and he doesn't cost much.

I suspect they were trying to work out a multi-year deal and couldn't come to an agreement. They can get an equivalent or better reliever for $8.5 million.

I have no clue why anybody is surprised by anything this ownership group does with Mark running things? He owns a team he doesn't want and won't sell unless someone pays him more then its worth. That's why I find it hilarious that fans get upset at the prospect of Leonsis buying the team. He's not who I'd ideally want to buy the team but he will pay the players and let his GM do his job. Just get the team away from Mark.

You guys needed a dose of reality after some of the free agent speculation.

Pretty surprising. Finnegan's been discussed already but Rainey is a bit of a shock to me too given they kept him stashed in the bullpen like a rule 5 draftee all season. What exactly is the plan here?

Saves probably less than $1 million because they have to backfill for him with at least an MLB minimum guy.
