Nick Martinez is the only player to accept his QO.

I'm a little surprised Pivetta turned his down. his FG crowd-sourced median estimate was for 3 years, $45 million. Unless that's super low, you'd figure 1 year at $21 million and then heading back out to the market for his age 33 season might have made sense.

It's interesting. Pivetta is a 4/5 at best, but he's going to be 32 next year. He's the kind of pitcher that a decent developmental organization should never have to pay for.

much better peripherals and advanced stats than results, fwiw.

Would you bring him in on 3/$45 million? I'd say no unless we were already losing draft picks due to other signings.

Jerry traded Chargois and Shenton for Diego Castillo, who they let walk, then traded Will Schomberg to reacquire Chargois, who they DFA’d, then traded cash to reacquire Shenton.

So doing some cross-multiplication here… they traded Schomberg, Chargois and cash for nothing.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/11/2024-25-mlb-free-agents.html

List current as of 11/22 (non-tender deadline).

Just excerpting the first basemen:
Quote
First Basemen

Jose Abreu (38)
Pete Alonso (30) – declined qualifying offer
Josh Bell (32)
Mark Canha (36)
Garrett Cooper (34)
Bobby Dalbec (30)
J.D. Davis (32)
Ty France (30)
Joey Gallo (31)
Paul Goldschmidt (37)
Yuli Gurriel (41)
Connor Joe (32)
Anthony Rizzo (35)
Carlos Santana (39)
Gavin Sheets (29)
Dominic Smith (30)
Rowdy Tellez (30)
Justin Turner (40)
Gio Urshela (33)
Christian Walker (34) – declined qualifying offer
Jared Walsh (31)

TBH, nothing too interesting on this list that we haven't talked about before. Alonso and Walker, then a bunch of older guys who have shown signs of decline already. I'm not even wild about Mark Canha anymore. Maybe JD Davis on a bounce back?

Guess he isn't washed after all

Some folks like to have a few dominant teams. Like the Premiere League.

It's broken, but a lot of it is aggravated by owners who simply view their team as another revenue stream.

I think the Snell signing jacks up Fried's price. The estimates of 6 years, $26 million Aav in mlb trade rumors and close to that in the average crowd source at FG look low by $20 million or more. Clemens's 5 year, $28 million AAV looks short a year.

I'm not disagreeing with you but I do think a Cap and Floor would change this. It will never happen and 4-5 teams will just sign every free agent that's any good while the rest sit on their hands collecting money. Its on the MLB to fix it but at some point fans of teams with owners like the Lerners are just going to walk away. I mean, its already happening in our fanbase. Its only going to get worse when Soto signs elsewhere even though the odds of him signing here were low. The idea he was out there free for us to sign and they didn't even try shows us how much Mark cares. I won't be putting money in his pocket anymore. I have cable simply for MASN. That will end eventually.

some mid-level starters are off the board:
- 34 year old Matthew Boyd to the Cubs for 2/$29M plus bonuses (4.75 ERA last year)
- 32 year old Frankie Montas to the Mets for 2/$34M with an opt-out after 2025 (4.84 ERA last year)

Seems Trevor Williams should be able to get at least 2/$28M

You think that much even with the injury issues. He hasn’t pitched a full year as a starter in a long time.

True, but he was pretty dominating last year until he got hurt and he came back strong in September. Montas is a year removed from major shoulder surgery, is about the same age, and pretty much sucked last year (his ERA was over 5 when he was traded). So if he's getting $17 million a year I'd think Williams could get a 2 year deal at around $14M a year. These early deals are showing that clubs are desparate for stating pitching.

Yea.  Montas and Boyd aren't very good.
