Talknats:
I think he counts Lowe in that spending. Ok.

It's not how many $ from their baseline after 2024 they've committed to this offseason. Rather, it's their active payroll relative to the market and MLB. Without payments to guys not active in the organization (Stras, Corbin referrals, Gallo's buyout ...), We're 29th by Ian"'s calculation when our market is good enough to be revenue sharing payers.

Isn't that just a bit more than what they shed with the Corbin contract?

TalkNats' math is wrong.  He has Corbin at $23.3 million, which is 140 million divided by 6 years.  However, he actually made $35 million last year, $25 million + $10 million deferred to this year.

So if you take the $35 million number plus another $15 million for Gallo, Lane Thomas, and Kyle Finnegan, that's $50 million right there off the books.

Even with the $25 million number, active payroll is down from $60.3 million to $50.6 million, which even with Ogasawara leaves them 29th.

Whoa! We’re #5!

Not sure how the Dodgers aren't #1 on this list. There's no way we've added more talent to the roster than they have.

Dodgers percentage of improvement is small given the baseline.

White Sox should be #1 then.

Wood and Herz:
https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-breakout-candidates-who-could-build-on-small-sample-success-in-2025
Quote
Although his ERA+ was below average at 97, some of his other performance indicators were far stronger, including a 3.26 expected ERA, a 3.77 SIERA, a 3.71 FIP and a 27.7% strikeout rate. Herz’s four-seam fastball was particularly impressive, generating a +9 run value with the third-highest whiff rate (30.5%) among starting pitchers (min. 300 swings on four-seamers) behind Ryan Pepiot and Garrett Crochet.

Corbin still available depending on how deep they want to sift through the garbage bargain bin.

Farm is remarkably thin for a team that’s had five straight losing seasons.

First the Strasburg debacle, now they won’t even bring Max back for one year, $15 million.  The Lerner passion for pennies exceeds the common sense or pride any normal person would have.

They promoted 2 starters and 3 outfieders, 2 studs. The system is a bit thin due to promotions. That was KLaw's point when he ranked the system 17th

That's still thin with Wood and Crews.  They have nowhere near the talent the Orioles did after their rebuild.

i think the biggest disconnect between the team and outsiders looking in is whether they have an in-house 3rd base solution. Lowe is very much a bridge player like LaRoche. Most of the rest of the diamond is covered by young guys still with room to step forward and some likelihood to do so. IF they do have a 3rd base solution, then they are close. they should be better than last year even without House / Morales / Wallace taking over 3rd.

It stinks...and the more I think about it, 71 wins is likely pretty optimistic...especially without Corbin to take the ball every 5 days, because we know what a big deal that was...

Yea most teams at the bottom are unable to accumulate as much talent as the Orioles. And most need help from free agents. Even the Astros in their prime needed to get Cole and Verlander from other teams.

What's concerning is the Phillies have a stronger farm system right now than the Nats.  One hope for this team within the NL East is Philly and NYM tripping over aging contracts, if they actually develop prospects that could be a big problem.
