Right about Chappy's and Yepez's ages. Somehow I thought he was closer to Meneses's age when called up

https://twinsdaily.com/news-rumors/minnesota-twins/intro-to-twins-payroll-2025-twins-will-need-to-increase-payroll-or-dump-more-core-players-r17155/

Apparently, the Twins are going to keep payroll at ~130 million. As it stands now, they are over that, and don't have viable options at 1B or DH. They can lose some by declining options on Farmers and Margot, but they'd still be over 130 million. Correa and Buxton have no trade clauses.

Could we make a trade for Pablo Lopez? He still has 3 years, 64 million left on his extension. At age 29, he will be in his prime.

Won't be cheap. Pitching rarely is. But I think the Nats have the pieces for a deal, particularly if they include Mitchell Parker in a trade. Something like Brady House, Mitchell Parker, and a third piece (Hassell?) for Pablo Lopez

A second option might be to use Luis Garcia as a trade piece for a third team. So, Garcia to the Mariners for Logan Evans, who would go to the Twins along with Brady House and a third piece (Susana, Lile, or Hassell).

A third option would he to have the Twins include Christian Vazquez in the deal, and swap out Brady House for Morales (or not including the Garcia trade piece or Parker) and maybe another small piece but with big potential. At 10 million next year, Vasquez would be an expensive backup. On the other hand, we could use a good backup for a season. Particularly one with playoff experience.

Addendum: Chris Paddack is due 7.5 million. Maybe they take that contract on. The Nats can put him in the rotation to start the season. If he pitches we'll, great. If not, try him in the pen. He has always been a tweener.

The more I look at it, the more a House, Parker, [one of Lile, Hassell, Bazzell, Hurtado, or Lara] for Lopez and eating Chris Paddack's contract year appeals to me.

Alternatively, we could swap Morales for House and Herz fir Parker. Herz has a much higher upside and would be worth way more than Parker.

I like the idea of targeting Lopez and bringing on Vazquez or Paddock would help the team and lower the price. Willing to deal House and Parker in the right deal. I'd prefer to hold Herz because I love the Ks.

Hmmmm .... do I love Herz K's more than House's homers?

Always choose the position player, other things equal.  Arms fall off.

and if House doesn't make enough contact to play, he can always double as a breeze-generating fan.

With Herz, I suppose Pohlad is cheap enough to insist we throw in enough sunblock to take him through his years of team control.

Or he can just only pitch in April and May, before the sun comes up in Minnesota.

I say hang onto all the youngsters and open the wallet for a first baseman/DH and a pitcher.

Lerners won't drop 50-60 million in new AAV. And the only pitcher worth getting is Burnes. Everyone else has one hit wonder, injury, or age concerns.

Seems the off season priority should be signing a player named Will Smith.

These threads are about hope. If we're being realistic, we'll admit that Rizzo will be allowed to sign a couple of cheap projects and that will be about it

Thanks for this. I've been wondering about the timeline for free agency etc.

so, after 11/5, teams will know most of the market and compensation, other than a few guys who will be added if their teams do not extend arbitration. Most likely, the top end of the market will be known after Monday.

Braves dump Soler's salary on The Angels Angels for Griffin Canning.

Canning will be in his final year of team control, which means he's probably about to sign an 11-year deal for $8.75/hour and turn into Corbin Burnes.

Via Sportrac, here are our FAs at the end of the 2024 season:

- Gallo (Mutual option for 2025)
- Patrick Corbin
- Trevor Williams
- Jacob Barnes

For 2025, they estimate our current payroll at ~$37 million with $48 million counting toward the cap. Strasburg counts for $23,571,429 and $35 million toward the luxury tax.

Our 40 man is full even after subtracting the 3 FAs and Gallo. Mason Thompson, Josiah Gray, Joan Adon, and Cade Cavalli all ended the season the 60-day IL.  Gray probably starts the season there again. I'd imagine Adon is DFA'd. Thompson had his second TJ in February and probably opens the season on the IL as well.

Other potential DFA candidates if they need to make room:
- Michael Rucker
- Rutledge
- Salazar
- Thad Ward
- Riley Adams

Keep Rutledge and Adams. Looking at the Yankees catchers, they need any of the Nats top three. Rutledge should be the long reliever / spot starter.

I'd like them to try to sign Trevor Williams to a reasonable contract.

If Soto did sign with the Nats they could have:

Wood - LF
Young - CF
Crews - RF
Soto - 1B
Garcia - 2B
House - 3rd (by May) (Supposed to have some power and good defense)
Abrams - SS
Ruiz - C
Yepez - DH

Outfield

Call
Garrett

Infield

Tena
Vargas

Sign a good pitcher and the Nats wouldn't have to apologize to anybody.
