Meh, this was the first year Cashman had any real concern over his job. He had a big payroll in 2023 and didn't get to the playoffs. A WS win totally resets expectations. He would be fine for a decade.
If they don’t get Soto they can still use the $31 million he made this year and pay other guys. Or even just part of it. And will still be competitive.

the question is really going to come down to whether or not Soto wants to stay with the Yankees, or whether he's going to go to the highest bidder.

My "guess" is that he stays with the Yankees even if they don't offer the biggest deal.

Unless their offer is significantly lower than the others he gets, I think you’re right.

Lol, there is no way Soto is taking less from the Yankees. If anyone was gonna do that, it was Judge, and he played them like a fiddle.

There's an article on mlb.com that says three top Met pitchers are going to be free agents this offseason. Severino, Quintana and Manaea. That means they're going to have to spend serious money to either resign them or other free agents. It also says they're going to free up $100 million this offseason.

This could affect the Nats if they go after a top pitcher. Chances are if the Mets want him they will outbid the Nats. Also, if they have to commit so much money to starting pitching and the possible resigning of Alonso, it could mean they won't be able to get Soto.

Bowden has a post on The Athletic with his predictions for FAs for 2025:
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5863532/2024/10/24/mlb-free-agents-2024-contract-team-predictions-soto/

He notes the Nats could get involved in the Soto sweepstakes and also lists us as good fits for Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, Anthony Santander, Cody Bellinger, Teoscar Hernandez, Tanner Scott, and Jordan Montgomery.

Tanner Scott seems strange. Another lefty reliever on top of Ferrer / Garcia / La Sorsa?

Is he saying Bellinger as a 1B?

Scott would be our closer. I'd love it, but I expect him to cost 60+ million

I was thinking the same thing. He'd slot in as the closer and push everyone down a slot. I just don't think it's as needed as 3 or 4 other positions and, if they do  add to the bullpen, would prioritize righties. Even if you are a fan of Finny and Law, right now we have them 1 more season. You would need to be a big believer in Brzykcy and think Salazar was the next Harvey find to not be more interested  in righties.

Honestly, if you sign Scott, the bullpen can sort itself out over the first three months. If you're in contention, you call up Susana, Sykora, Bennett, and Cavali, and see who fits. Those guys could be fantastic out of the pen, and would be your middle relief in a WC hunt.

Based off a Bleacher Report article that had the Nats trading Susana and Hassell to the Marlins for Sandy Alcántara.

Okay, so I think we would all do that trade. I also think the Marlins would laugh so hard that they'd be unable to hang up the phone.

So the real question is, what else would you add to that trade to get Alcantara. I doubt the Nats would have any real interest in guys with MLB time, except maybe CJ. Do you give up CJ in that trade?

House? Sykora? King?

I would want to know more about

- Alcantara's recovery. Is he a TJS guy who can't quite make it back? (Like Cavalli)

- CJ's head. Is he serious about being a better ballplayer, or moping and hoping to stay our all night, again?

Well you don't know.

I would assume full recovery for Alcantara. Cavalli seems like a fluke and he has always had high risk of being a reliever.

And we don't know about Abrams. So I would assume first half Abrams.

Jim Bowden's free agent predictions. We have a Soto thread (or two?) so we can discuss there.

Other interesting free agents

Burnes - 7 years, 247 million
Alonso - 7/204
Santander- 7/150.5
Christian Walker - 3/72
Flaherty - 3/68 (seems short on years to me)
Tanner Scott - 4/60
Teoscar Hernandez- 3/75

He also has Brandon Lowe becoming a free agent

So much for Santander being bargain option. At those prices, I'd take Teoscar. Walker at $24 million AAV is a tough call for me. I'd rather trade for O'Hearn. I'd also try to sign Winker, especially if he's learning 1st. All assuming no Soto.

I don't want to get into another 7 year, $35 million AAV deal for any pitcher. I'm not a Flaherty fan, so my reaction of "that might be a doable contract" probably indicates it's low.

Wonder if Walker would take 4/75. But honestly, at those prices, I'd rather take a flyer on Paul Goldschmidt.

I'd take Winker as a platoon DH. He likes hitting at Nats Park.

I think O'Hearn could be a deadline rental next year if the Nats are competitive.

Winker/ Yepez would work

We need to get someone who can either ops+ 120+ or have an era below 3.8 with 170+ innings.  We need a needle mover of some type.  Doesn’t have to be everywhere.

Winker had a 124 wRC+ v rhp this year, and Yepez had a 126 vs lhp. That would be a dirt cheap way to get that kind of production at DH.

Winker has also hit .311/.424/.521 at Nats Park in his career.

For what it's worth, I don't know that Yepez beats out Garret and Chapparo

We pretty much need two of each of those. One could be Gore. But this team desperately needs offense.

I like Yepez a bit more than Chappy because he's younger and plays a bit better in the field. As for Garrett, I could live with him as the 4th OF if the team is ok with Crews or Wood as a backup CF

Chappy is younger than Yepez.

If we're going off of career vs LHP, Chapparo is the best, but only has 45 plate appearances.

Garrett has a 132 wRC+ in 147 PAs. Yepez 126 in 88 PAs.

I wonder if the Orioles would take Yepez or Chapparo in trade for O'Hearn
