2025 TV
« Topic Start: October 02, 2024, 03:14:32 PM »
I think it is kind of big news today that Bally's is dropping all MLB teams but the Braves for 2025.

https://cordcuttersnews.com/bally-sports-will-drop-tv-rights-to-11-mlb-teams-as-its-bankruptcy-continues/

That leaves well over 2/3rds of the league without a favorable tv deal, and there has been lots of talk about Manfred wanting to package up as many teams in an in market streaming package to sell to the likes of Amazon/Apple/Google/Netflix/etc.   This came up during the Orioles sale as well with some hints that the Nats and Os would be included in such a package.

It's hard to imagine the real big teams will sign on, but they could well get 25 teams.   I'd guess they'd just let the RSNs exist for the luddites and keep collecting money until cable shuts down, and go all in on a national streaming deal that could possibly lead to the removal of TV territories.

It will be an interesting off season in this area, that's for sure!

Probably should be in the bally thread in the out of town scoreboard

I wonder why Manfred would want to deal with a middleman when they're very capable of offering reliable, high quality streaming in-house.

Some teams like the Dodgers, Phillies and others will always need their own TV deal because of the long-term huge salaries they've committed to.

Maybe, but I think this will end up with the Nats finally in a somewhat customer friendly streaming situation.

There is not enough money in a pure subscription model like that.   The streaming companies like to pay for these deals to drive up their subscription numbers and get eyes on their programming, and that's where the money is at the moment.

The Bally broadcasts really sucked because the TV screen was dominated by continuous MLB score updates, which nobody wants to see in the first place because it spoils the games that one might want to watch later on.  The update bar is 1/3 of the way up on the screen.  The only way around it is to physically block the screen.

No thanks on Apple. I was excited about their MLS deal and it turned out bad. Great production quality but awful start times all season.

We don't really need those bottom line graphics in this day and age anyway, when everyone's got a phone in their hands at all times.

Slight digression, but the same applies to NFL coverage - just because Fox got it wrong didn't mean CBS had to do the same...

Apple would be the best thing possible.   Easily the best broadcast in terms of A/V quality

I'm sure MLB will be super excited about the dozens of people tuning in.

Whatever things turn out to be it's going to be better than the old days when channel 20 had a handful of Senator games with channel 9 doing the Sunday afternoon games. The rest we listened to on a transistor radio. Got a national game on Saturday with Tony Kubeck and Joe Garagioli.

Exactly. I remember when Channel 5, WTTG, did Nats games with the great Bob Wolf broadcasting. But there were not lots and lots of games. Then the Expansion Senators only had random TV games.

Growing up in Philly we had Sunday afternoon home games on tv and a few road games in the late and mid 1960s.  Then UHF came and we got a few more.  I realized I could get WOR channel 9 in NYC from my black and white portable tv in my bedroom. Watched the amazing Mets at night.  They seemed to have more games on TV.

Changes to MASN leadership:

It's paywalled but TalkNats says that MASN plans to continue to keep the Nats' TV rights.

Hopefully there is a period of massively reduced revenue before the next renegotiation period that is long enough to end MASN

Growing up with the Saturday Game of the Week on NBC with Joe Garagoli and Tony Kubek.  This was of course after This Week in Baseball with Mel Allen.  Monday night baseball on ABC with Howard Cosell, or Keith Jackson, or Al Michaels doing the play by play.  We were Kings!
