Lol, he has a .180 xBA. Once teams realize he can't hit, they'll stop pitching him carefully. Dude is going to spend all next season in the minors. King is a more viable

Tena hits from the wrong side, same as Darren Baker. Not useful as a pair to Luis Garcia.

getting a feeling that, with all the lefty hitting MIs, one is going to get traded off the island.

Vargas is slashing .277/.311/.366 versus lefties. Not awful for the short side of the platoon, especially when Garcia isn't so dreadful versus LHP that he can't play against some LHP if the staff thinks he matches up well against them.

I don't think Vargas is "good" as much as I think he is a good utility player who can adequately field 2B/SS/3B and cover starts against tough LHP. And while Jose Tena didn't have a drastic platoon split, his SSS splits so far this year along with his glove may also favor keeping a solid glove backup who can hold his own against LHP.

Vargas is also cheap. Even in his final arbitration year, I can't imagine his contract being so high the team wouldn't mind ejecting him at the deadline next year should they be competing and see an upgrade.
Tena hits lefties well. He can split time with Garcia. Or they can trade Garcia for a reliever

but his age 25!

I remember Linty posting about how in the minors, the defense would play in basically a T-Ball formation.

He still couldn’t hit. And once they figured it out he was gone.

Vargas has a .299 OBP and a .320 slugging.  This, along with his zero range and noodle arm in the fields, makes him possibly the worst player in baseball

But batting 1.000 when it comes to creating peculiar belly dance moves players can perform when they get to first base, pretty sure that was him.  He'll be back next year and I look forward to seeing what he comes up with then, perhaps he'll teach Hickey to do the Macarena every time he goes to the mound and the next batter actually makes an out.

And yet with that zero range and noodle arm, he consistently grades out as a good infield defender.

He's not even the worst player on his team, let alone in baseball

Chopping through some roster deadweight to go below 40 on the 40 man roster.

Vargas, I think they will let him see the offers out there, then offer a minor league contract with good bucks and a non-roster invite. That way, they can bring him up without burning a 40 man slot over the winter

This surprises me. Seemed to be a Martinez favorite and actually made some sense for the roster next season.
