2024 MVP
« Topic Start: September 14, 2024, 09:55:37 PM »
The topic came up at the WNFF M&G about who the Nats MVP might be this year...

Despite the disappointing season, we have had some pretty good performances put together by a few players.

Who would you nominate over the other contenders, few as there may be?

In terms of driving attendance, it's a toss up between Flo Rida and Carly Rae Jepsen.

In terms of team members, I'll go with James Wood.   That OBP and patience kept pitch count differentials from being much worse.

Candidates:
Jake Irvin
Young
Abrams
Finnegan
Garcia

I think I would go with Irvin

Let's see what the numbers say:

bWAR leaders
1. Jacob Young - 3.0
1. CJ Abrams - 3.0
3. Jake Irvin - 2.3
4. Luis Garcia - 2.0

fWAR leaders
1. Luis Garcia - 2.9
2. Jacob Young - 2.8
3. MacKenzie Gore - 2.6
4. Mitchell Parker - 2.4

Jacob Young is probably the team MVP according to WAR (though personally, I've long thought that WAR overrates defense and is biased towards players who play premium defensive positions like CF, 3B, SS) and that's kind of funny as there is a very good chance he isn't even a starter on the 2025 Nationals.

I'm kind of shocked at the 3 names I come up with, but Mitchell Parker and Luis Garcia are  very good candidates, as well as Kyle Finnegan.

I love Young's D and his speed,  and the .318 OBP is close to the line where I think he's an offensive asset. Offensive stats that don't look at his baserunning, like SLG, underestimate his offensive value because his HBPs and BBs are pretty frequently doubles. He's a disrupter. He's gotten on a bit over 150 times, counting errors, and scored 73 runs. I think the WAR numbers are legit.

That said, I like the balance in Luis G's game. He's stepped up to be a plus in the field, which I think shocks the heck out of everyone, and has shown decent power without distorting his game. I like the contact (just 16 K%). He's not in Young's class as a baserunner, but is not as  - prone as other regulars. My one doubt about him is his ability to hit lefties. This is a guy I would not have been surprised to see beat out in the Spring, so i suppose that may be why I lean to him over Young (who I thought might have beat out Robles).

Parker is a "where did this come from" guy. I still am a Gore fan, but his mid-season step back takes him out of consideration. Herz doesn't have the innings. Irvin has a good body of work, too, and more innings, so maybe I should lean that way, but he's a bit more homer prone. Maybe just don't want Parker's contributions overlooked, or maybe it is a recency bias.

As for Finnegan, performance counts. fWAR kind of hates him, and he's not the kind of high K, low BB guy I like, but I do think there's something to pretty reliably taking the ball and finishing games when you don't have a huge lead. He could end up with 40+ saves, and so far has only blown 5. That's locking down well over half the wins. Now he has a role getting guys like Ferrer and Salazar comfortable in higher leverage situations, being the guy they turn the ball over to and preserving their work, or even occasionally bailing them out of an 8th (or, for Salazar, turning it over to Ferrer for the last lefty in a jam, comfortable that Finny can pick up Ferrer).

I have to give it to Jacob Young. In a season partially defined by trying to figure out what we have or don't have with our pitching, having an elite defensive player in center field has been a lone bright spot in another season of bad team fielding. And it isn't like he an automatic out. .650 OPS is playable and he's solid on the bases. More a #9 hitter than a leadoff, he's a terror later in games if he is on base and the top of the order is up.

Runner up is Jake Irvin. Not missing starts and averaging almost 6 IP an outing at a 4.19 ERA is really fine production that would find a spot in any rotation. If the Nationals suddenly decide they want to compete a bit next season, you can mark Irvin in there as a #3/#4 starter you can win with.

I'm leaning more and more toward Finnegan.

Jacob young for defense.

And for bringing some excitement to a bad team.  It was unfortunate when his caught stealings started to pick up, but with the right coaching he could be back to 85%+ success on steals.

Well, I got the pitcher and the player in reply #5. I haven't been to Good Guys in a while so I missed running into Young. Didn't realize they gave out an award.

2025 meet and great should be at Good Guys.
