It seems like the pitchers are working him inside.

I’m not sure if Crews is ready for the show. Several games ago a stat chart was on TV and I was unable to read the whole thing but a quick glance stated that Crews was unable to hit off speed pitches and broke it down. Does anyone know the stats and is that why he is not having success offensively.

He's ready.  His challenge will be overcoming the poor coaching he'll get in this org, but Boras usually has ways of helping his clients get around that.

Eh, he isnt going to find that at Triple A though. Its been thoroughly documented, but the pitching at Triple A is largely comprised of guys with meh stuff trying to develop command so they can make the back of a rotation. If you have great spin or velo, teams aren't going to let you waste a lot of bullets in the minors.

Crews' difficulties with spin were well documented. He needs reps. Its why I wanted him up at the majors back in July.

He's fine. He's not striking out a ton (20%), drawing his walks, and a bit of a BABIp victim (.250). If he had real trouble with breaking stuff, then that K rate would be much higher.

He'll be fine.

If the Nationals acquire a 1B/DH this offseason, they could probably run out a lineup early looking something like Young-Wood-DH-Chaparro/Yepez-Tena-Garcia and hide Dylan Crews lower in the lineup until he gets going.

Very small sample size but his stats when he leads off are worse than when he bats farther down the order.

Yeah, and he's still in his breaking in period.  I don't think he has Wood's ceiling, but he's done nothing to suggest he won't be a strong bat over the next couple years.

At the plate. In the field he looks much better than Wood.

True, although Wood looks worse in the field than he is because his height makes him look slow at times.

Very true. The first time I saw Wood play in the minors I thought he loped and didn't seem to run full out. He can motor though. The other day when Crews was on second and Wood was on first he was right behind Crews when they scored on the double to left. He can steal when they want him too also.

Crews is a star you will notice because he is electric. Wood is a star who you will notice, as Senatorswin suggests, when you look at how far he has nonchalantly hit that last drive.

A good pair.

Major league parks have an extra tier that minor league parks don’t. Meaning the lights are placed higher and require a bit of adjustment time.

You can't see him (he's electric!)

Ha!

Crews looked alive, unlike many of the other Nats during last night's 10-1 beating.

Could be a coincidence since it's a small sample size but Crews has hit much better when he bats down in the order as opposed to leading off.

I don't recall where he batted for LSU. Perhaps at leadoff he's more conscious of working the count rather than jumping on pitches that are hittable. He may be getting himself into holes. I'd be curious about whether he has fewer problems second time through the order at leadoff than he has as 1st batter, 1st inning.

He batted leadoff at LSU and he has hit primarily leadoff in the minors.

Again, could be a coincidence but:

Batting first - AB - 46, AVG - .174, OBP - .224, SLG - .326, OPS - .551

Batting second - AB - 15, AVG - .267, OBP - .313, SLG - .267, OPS - .579

Batting seventh - AB - 21, AVG - .333, OBP - .375, SLG - .619, OPS - .994

I would bat him 7th for a while just to let him chill.

He's definitely struggling. FWIW, i saw yesterday that Jackson Holliday is batting .169 and is a bench player now in Baltimore. Player development takes time.

Holliday had one week where it looked like he had figured major league pitching out but then went right back to looking overmatched.

Statcast likes his contact a lot more than his results (ie, wOBA of .263, xwOBA of .315). We wouldn't be kicking about a .250 / .310 /. 422 line, which is what his x stats point to. He also has a .230 BABIP, which backs up he's been snakebit. His base running is terrific and his D is a plus. I think it is a good debut at the skill level if not the results. He does not look overwhelmed.

He's who should be getting an extension right now.
