I'd say wait and see.  We thought the Max/Trea haul was good and it hasn't been at all.  Could be 2-3 years until we have a good sense of what Clemmey can become.
I was okay with that trade since I was warm on Keibert Ruiz and Josiah Gray, and I thought the primary purpose was to open some payroll and clear the decks for a rapid rebuild around Soto. Take a small step back in 2022 and then go all in again starting in 2023. And I think Rizzo perhaps thought that. Then less than 12 months later the Lerners announce they're selling the team and everything got rough in a hurry.

In hindsight, yes, Ruiz and Gray were not the right package. It should have been low minors lottery tickets, not two major league ready guys who you believed could have been role players on a winning team.

Part of the issue was the Dodgers agreed to pay $15m for the 2028 Scherzer deferral, which reduced the amount of talent they offered in return.

If they had in mind multi year rebuild in 2021, then the close to majors guys (Adams, Thompson, Ruiz, Gray, Lane) probably would not have been trade targets. None were big high end upside. Arguably, the only guys who were longer term assets were Aldo Ramirez, Guasch, and Schuman. This was when Rizzo came out with the retool not rebuild line. Regardless of whether you think that was just for public consumption, the actual trades and players acquired suggest short term help rather than upside needing years to develop

Rizzo said on the Junkies this morning that the offers for Thomas this year were much better than last year.

What do you expect him to say?  He will say same thing next year with Finny.

Hope so because I firmly expect Finnegan to turn into a pumpkin next year

I'm hoping he gets dealt over the winter, but I believe that packages for relief pitchers tend to be pretty light during the off-season.

That may be why they were willing to pay up. They see him as capable of playing CF. It'll be interesting to watch. He never looked great out there, but I think his speed may be more of an asset in CF than a corner. Make up speed for his less than great ability to get jumps on balls. I expect he's going to have a tough time reading the ball when it is hit directly to him. The bat more than plays in CF if he can hold down the position defensively.

Its also probably that his defense improves with their coaching and defensive placement

I know Tena can still turn into his most likely destiny of a shaky glove with a bat that doesn’t give enough value to guarantee a bench spot. Still, if Rizzo turned Lane Thomas into a usable bench player who can move around the infield and a couple interesting low minors prospects at a moment our low minors are looking thin, then that is a dang good haul for Lane Thomas.

Would be even better if they spend this offseason and we see benefit of saving on an arbitration OF versus a rookie contract replacement, but I’ll focus on the above scenario…..

Supposedly a very good glove man.

Has to be.  Remember Soto put up a sub-.800 in '22 after being traded to the Padres.  Darnell should be in the HoF as a hitting coach, right next to the spot they're getting ready for Hickey.
