Welcome to the new analytics era

Having been left in the dust by all the other teams that figured it out before we did.

He’s a top 3 prospect in this draft. Stop getting so obsessed with mocks

Team is a joke regardless.  Just good to avoid another Borasian who'll be gone as soon as they hit FA.

If he’s good he’ll just fire his current agent and hire Boras. Thats not a good reason to select a guy. We’ve now reached the point where we’re cheaping out on the draft too lol

Not sure what you mean by saving money.  If they sign him $2m below slot, that's $2m they can spread around the rest of their draft and in theory overpay to get better talent lower down.

Skenes is a freak and from the Air Force Academy. Grant Taylor is middle relief for the White Sox.

The SEC is barely low A ball. There's no magical sauce there that makes major leaguers. If there was, everyone would draft from the SEC. It shouldn't factor in to whether or not to draft someone, especially with all the analytic data that we have available to us.

Grant Taylor would be the second best pitcher in our rotation presently... and in three seasons, he would replace Gore as the team's ace. Just saying. The guy is Crochet 2.0.

That was the take MLB Network made about the pick.

Bremner #2??

He was apparently a middle first round consensus talent.

The MLB.com commentators say the Nats are saving draft money. Harold Reynolds saing Willits is an underslot pick

Anderson to Seattle at #3. Holliday should go to the Rockies.

How did the Nationals screw this pick up? Ethan Holliday was the clear #1 player in the draft with the highest ceiling. Colorado just fell into the dream scenario... F' my life.

He was 3 at espn, 5 at mlbpipeline, and 8 with keithlaw/theathletic. I'm fine w/it when you consider it was Holiday+Boras means he leaves as a UFA, or Willits and he stays. Time will tell. But I definitely like this more than Kade or Doyle, especially if we do land a top 15-30 guy at 49. Weird as hell to see a guy ranked 18th and I think 16th from those 3 sources go 2, I don't really understand that at all.

I get the dislike of Willits, he definitely wasn't the best prospect in the draft, but if he hits his ceiling, he's probably a better selection than Holiday and the 2 pitchers, but we better get something good for having gone so underslot with the $$$, I don't want to see wtf picks in rounds 2 and 3 and 4.

I need to get away from this team until Mark sells. He’s infected the draft room now. Such a shame what he and his siblings have done to this franchise.

DeRosa was the hottest Nat to ever plan on the team. Even hotter than Craig Stammen.

MLB, Reynolds and DeRosa, say that Willits is OK. He does not hit for power, but his bat-speed means he can hit some homers. His dad is a college baseball coach, so he has learned the game. Nothing bad about him, but, those two say, he is not the best player in the draft. That's clearly Holiday.

What are the odds that kid ever plays a game with Wood? 0? Can’t wait to trade Gore and Wood. Just a continuous rebuild. Absolute clown show draft pick.

Hopefully they can snag Eyanson in the second or Shores in the 3rd or 4th.

MLB.com on Willits:
Quote
Scouting grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 60

Willits comes from a baseball family, with father Reggie playing in the big leagues before coaching with the Yankees and returning to his alma mater as the associate head coach at Oklahoma -- where Eli's brother, Jaxon, is starring as a sophomore. Willits also is committed to the Sooners but is unlikely to get to Norman because he's a slam-dunk early first-rounder after reclassifying from the 2026 class. He draws some comparisons to Anthony Volpe with better physical tools at the same stage, and he'll likely be the youngest true prospect in the 2025 crop at 17 years, 7 months on Draft Day. In three years at Fort Cobb-Broxton HS, he won six state Class B championships (three fall, three spring).

A switch-hitter who's more proficient from the left side, Willits is exceedingly polished at the plate for his age. He has outstanding bat-to-ball skills, making consistent line-drive contact while rarely straying from the strike zone. He may never have more than average raw power, but his hitting ability should enable him to tap into most of it and provide 15 homers per season.

Willits has the nonstop motor and instincts to get the most out of his physical tools. He plays quicker than his plus speed and earns solid grades for his arm strength and defensive play at shortstop, and scouts won't be shocked if those both become pluses once he's fully developed. There's no reason he shouldn't stay at shortstop but he'd also profile well in center field.
