You are allowed to prenegotiate with 1-1 candidates.

That makes sense

I know...I'm saying is that it was fait accompli before Rizzo got fired...

I think Anderson also has Boras. Could be either.

Could be...but Rizzo was out west at a game very recently and met with Boras, Holliday, and Holliday Sr.  Just my hunch...

I think I just read today on NYT from Keith Law that DeBartolo would be more likely to target fast movers from college and suggests we go with Anderson.

What’s the logic of why he would do that?

My guess is because Garcia Jr., and Gore are already hitting arbitration and Abrams hits it after the 2026 season. So if you think these guys represent a core that can win, you want to add to it sooner rather than later. A guy like Anderson projects to be in the rotation either by the end of next year or in 2027.

Danny Hultzen immediately springs to mind.

Rizzo was definitely going with Holliday, and not a pitcher who's only 6 foot 2.  We'll see what happens now.

I think the deal was done with Boras before Rizzo got fired.  DeBartolo doesn't have to be involved with the first pick.  Again, just my hunch...

I think LSUNats suggested Eyanson if available on pick 2 would be a high end starter were the Nats to go with Holliday at 1-1. Maybe not him specifically, but there may be some quick moving pitchers at pick 2.

Here is KLaw’s logic. I don’t see how we can interpret an interim GM’s motivation except they won’t want to draw any additional scrutiny to their bosses.

As far as I can tell, the Nats are still working with a list of six-to-seven candidates for this pick, although I get the sense it’s more likely to be one of Anderson, Aiva Arquette, or Ethan Holliday than one of the others (Liam Doyle, Jamie Arnold, Eli Willits, maybe Seth Hernandez). Given the ill-timed firing — or scapegoating — of GM Mike Rizzo on Sunday, I think it’s less likely they take Holliday or Hernandez than it was previously. The change in leadership might just make them more likely to take a college player who’s more likely to yield a quicker return, and fortunately this year there are several such college guys who’d be strong picks here, including Anderson, who didn’t so much help himself with his College World Series performance as underline what he’d already shown.

Would Arquette be a credible pick?

I see it just the opposite...taking Holliday gives the people in place more breathing room for a longer period of time...

For sure, BA just had him going 1-3 to the Mariners today and he’s top 6 no matter what list you’re looking at.  Big shortstop that you assume sticks there, 20-25 HRs, best hitter in the NCAA this year. For some reason he doesn’t get as much discussion but he’s always mentioned as in the mix for 1-1.

KLaw gave the snide sort comment about Holliday fits the pattern of House and Green being high schoolers with identified weaknesses in their hit tool. Ignoring the snide, how does Arquette compare?

I'd argue that the detailed breakdowns of Green painted him as a higher risk higher reward prospect than Holliday. As far as I can tell, there were bigger issues with Green's swing and miss than Holliday's. House was taken 1-11 and projected to go between 1-10 and 1-20 iirc, so I think that's a really unfair comparison. BTW, he was projected to go after Kahlil Watson, and many of us were hoping for Watson. Watson hasn't panned out.

Holliday has a hitting ceiling like his father's while playing 3B. Arquette is a big bodied SS that is projected to stay at SS and hit ~20 HRs if all goes well. Holliday comes with significant risk and higher ceiling. Arquette is lower risk. That said, even many of these "low risk" college IFs don't hit their ceilings.

Holliday. Maybe the 3B of the future, but nothing wrong with having a future. Or the SS who replaces CJ when the Lerners have the future GM trade CJ for more prospects.

DeBartolo is pretty blah, but after watching his interview it’s hard to see him making some safe pick for the sake of making a safe pick. He’ll probably just make sure analytics are properly weighed with whatever top picks they already have in mind. Rizzo obviously had a pick in mind with the draft team.
