Paulson: Wood is getting the call. Will debut on Monday.
Andrew Golden @andrewcgolden Can confirm @granthpaulsen ’s report that top prospect James Wood will be called up to make his major league debut on Monday in DC, per source.
Why are we waiting until Monday?
service time manipulation?
debuting at home, not in Tampa. I have Monday tickets. Also was at Strasmas and JZ's debut. On the downside, was at Joey Singles debut (before he became Joey Singles).
Who cares? Like that is the dumbest reason to wait to call someone up.
the turnstiles care. It's purely non-baseball, but it is a reward for the SPH base.
Very exciting. He shouldn’t be expected to dominate right away and “fix” this lineup, but we should see flashes and growth and a glimpse into the future. Much better than watching fill-in bodies like Rosario.
Progression like Elly De La Cruz would be sufficient. Flashes in year one and then a very good player the first full year.
For Wood, he won’t be able to earn a full year of service time this year. Top prospects called up midseason can earn a full service year by finishing in the top two of Rookie of the Year voting, but that will be essentially impossible for him at this point. Even if he crushes the ball for the next three months, he won’t be able to catch guys like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Paul Skenes, Joey Ortiz and the other rookies that have already had plenty of time to pull ahead. He also won’t have enough time to get to Super Two status after 2026, based on where previous cutoffs have been. The earliest he could qualify for arbitration is after 2027 and his earliest free agency would be after 2030. Future optional assignments could push those timelines back but that won’t be a concern if he keeps mashing the way he has been on the farm.
