had Senzel hit like Winker, then perhaps the lineup could have carried more playing time for Nunez, is what you are saying. I buy that, too.

I think just the opposite. Had Senzel hit like Winker there would have been no need for Nunez and Vargas. As it was they waited too long to jettison Senzels azz.

What I meant was that if Senzel had hit like Winker there would have been no need for Vargas.  Vargas was taking playing time from both Senzel and Nunez.  No Vargas means more time for Nunez.

Anyone else want to say to Davey that, when he sits Garcia against a lefty, he ought give Nunez a shot instead of Vargas?

I mean, Gata would say he wants to give Vargas a shot, but he doesn't mean it the way I mean it.

Usually a SS can play 3B and 2B, but not vice versa.  Nunez was picked up because of his combination of high BB/K and speed, which led to strong OBPs and many stolen bases...in High A and AA.  But his ISO was lower than Jacob Young's in the minors   Many players who get seriously injured at his age struggle to make it back, 23/24 year olds need to play at whatever level they're at, baseball is a game of repetition.  Spending a season on the bench like he has will add significant challenges for his further development.   He's had 28 PAs all year and turns 24 next week.

I get the intent of bringing him over, but it feels like a bargain bin attempt to make up for all the weak drafts.  The optimistic scenario is he works his way back next year in Rochester, but his bat is what's been keeping him out of the lineup, not his glove.

You have to be nuts to play third when Aaron Judge is at bat. It is such a different skill set to imply that any shortstop can play third.

I think he should give CJ a shot at second and play Nunez at short

Of his 8 hits to date, how many have been line drives (vs. infield hits or Texas Leaguers)?

but it's not an unusual switch. We are trying it with Tena on the fly. All he said is that usually a SS can handle it.

True. We remember the successes. But there are few that can be both Orr and Cheevers.

I dunno but they are all singles.  He has no power at all.  He's maybe a backup IF at best.  It's not 1958.

Bluege played some SS, but mainly he played 3B. Became the regular 3B in 1924 because he was a great fielder, even though Doc Prothro (a dentist who was spotted playing for his town team) was a good hitter.

Quote
Whenever American League President Joe Cronin was asked to rank big-league third basemen, he always gave the same answer: “Well, you start with Bluege.”1 Of course shortstop Cronin was referring to his old partner on the right side of the Washington Senators teams of the 1920s and ’30s, Ossie Bluege. At the 1970 World Series, watching Baltimore’s Brooks Robinson make one outstanding play after another, Joe would remark “That’s another Ossie Bluege play.”2 He would often comment that he never had to worry about a ball that was hit to his right side with Bluege manning the hot corner.

From Bluege's SABR bio: https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/Ossie-Bluege/

Robinson tried playing his shallow 3B against Frank Howard. Hondo nearly took Robinson's head off with a line drive to left, a drive close enough that it took Robinson's cap to the outfield. Robsinson never again played shallow 3B when Howard was at bat.

Sounds like Blue911 had Robinson and Howard in the back of his mind when we got on this SS moving to 3rd discussion.

gotta think they are going to want to see him get regular at bats. That'd be in the minors, AAA or AA.

Maybe Vargas comes back as the back up MI.  Nunez will need reps next year after not playing much this season, that will def be AA or AAA.
