Wood and Cavalli are with the Nats & we hold 3rd WC by a game on 7/23. What should the Nats do?

Tank! Sell any vet not under control after 2025. Restock. Target is a long term rebuild.

Selective selling of FAs you can replace internally. E.g., Floro for Ribalta, Law for Ferrer, etc...
10 (37%)
Promote appropriately but otherwise hold tight and give the squad a chance.
8 (29.6%)
Try a Candelario trade in reverse to plug a weakness (1B) - say Made and Rutledge
3 (11.1%)
Go for it. Lots of CFs coming. Trade a Lile / Hassell / Vaquero and go for WC.

5 back

But still 3rd worst record in the NL and just 10 days to the trade deadline.  Sellers no doubt.

Reds, Giants, and Cubs should pack it in as well. There's still 5 teams within 1.5 games for the last 2 spots - Cards + 0.5, Mets in, AZ tied with the Mets, Pitt 0.5 back, and the Padres 1 back. So you can say we are 4 back of the team that's in 9th.

We could easily get right back in this thing.  Playing all these teams ahead of us now is beneficial

easily is tough. even a sweep of the Padres would have them ahead of us. 4 game back of the Mets, 6 teams ahead for the 3rd wild card.

Stick with the players the team has. Trade Winker for a prospect. Fetch Crews in August.

The real question is, will Rizzo come to regret not being (or not being able to be) more aggressive last offseason?

Nats have surprised a lot with how good the pitching has been. But the pitching is young and relies on velo. Injuries are unavoidable. Its entirely plausible that next season, we might be missing one of Gore/Irvin/Parker. And we still don't know what Cade is (and even if he is a legit starting pitcher, he will be capped on innings in 2025).

What does this season look like if we sign Matt Chapman/Jemeir Candelario and JD Martinez/Rhys Hoskins? Could we be having legit conversations about what it would take to trade for a Jack Flaherty or Tyler Anderson?

I think the starting pitching surprised management a ton. I also think Williams injury hurt.

I think this year is about finding out what we have while we wait for the prospects to come up at the end of the year. Was Joey Meneses legit? Can Kieboom win a job in the spring, no. Since he couldn't lets have a placeholder until House is ready with Senzel. Since that didn't work out can we count on Lipscomb for a role in the future. Lets play him every day and find out. Do we have to worry about replacing Garcia at second? It was hopefully going to be a year to find out about Cavalli and Rutledge.

So now we have the answers to a lot of the questions and some surprising pieces in the rotation. We have a great fielding center fielder who contributes at the plate. Now it's close to finding out if Wood, Crews and House are the real deal. It's they are it's getting close to rock and roll time. If not ...
