Absolutely do nothing with Parker.   Rizzo needs to trade Williams ASAP

Have to have a willing partner and no one is desperate yet. Parker will be fine in the pen. Can use him to skip Irvin and manage innings

Sounds more like Baldelli is disappointed in his players' inability to adjust.

Sure, manager speak
And of course you are correct
But still: it's pitching.

Has nothing to do with desperation.   The deadline is just an arbitrary day.   Teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, Braves, etc won’t ever stop needing pitching this season.  Rizzo thinks Williams value will be higher in two months.  It absolutely will not

If he is a serviceable 4/5, its absolutely higher at the deadline. Pitching value gets increased at the deadline.

His ERA will be well north of 4 in 2 months.   Hence, his value will never be higher

if that's the expectation of the teams hunting for help, then they aren't buying him now.

today starts a stretch of 17 games in 17 days. This might have been the time for a 6 man rotation were Gray healthy or Rutledge /Herz /Ward pitching well in AAA.

The Nats have flip-flopped Parker and Corbin in the rotation so now Corbin goes Sunday vs Seattle and Parker Monday vs ATL. Better pitcher against the better hitting team.

Getting close to the time when Corbin can vanish. He pitches OK about every other start, and maybe two out of three, but that's too many automatic losses.

Talknats notes we rank 16th in starter era. That’s even with Corbin and Gray.

Corbin's already accrued 10+ years of service time.  He'll likely retire after the season.  Look for an ERA around 6.0.  I'd make him a #5 to start the season, then move him to mop-up duties sometime in June or July.
Can we move him to the bullpen now?  If he performs well in short or middle relief, it's the ONLY possible way another team might be interested in him at the trading deadline.  Otherwise it's going to be an UGLY scene if he sticks around as his contract expiration approaches.

I will go out on a limb and say he gets 2 more starts before we reach a decision point. There is no minor leaguer who has shown he's ready to take his slot in the rotation and Cavalli and Gray are several weeks away from being considered. Even if you view him as a "7th or 8th" starter, we kind of need him now.

Note that the little flip they did in the rotation of him and Parker not only lined up Parker against the tougher hitting team, but also will make it feasible to skip Corbin when we get out of the 17 games in 17 days stretch we are in. The way the rotation lined up, the next off day would be Corbin's 5th day when he would be due to start (June 10). They can skip him and just keep Parker on his 5th day (june 11) if they want. It probably would be too soon to start Gray or Cavalli on Saturday June 15, but you could maybe see a Herz / Ward / Rutledge that day if they are going well.

I think you mean two more of Cavalli's starts. Its entirely possible they return him from the IL and option him to Triple A

oh, more or less, i was talking about who could possibly take corbin's slot in the rotation. I don't see an obvious candidate until Gray / Cavalli get healthy or Herz / Rutledge / Ward show something in the minors.

I assumed it was Cavalli, unless they really, really want to manage Parker's innings.

Grant Paulsen notes:
Quote

⚾️ 3.88 team ERA is 5th best in NL.
⚾️ Rotation ERA ranks 6th in NL.
⚾️ Non-Corbin rotation ERA 3rd NL (PHI, LAD).

Irvin was the first Nationals pitcher to go 7 innings, strikeout 10+, give up no runs, and get a no decision since Max Scherzer in 2021

Not sure if inning limits are a real thing for Gore, Irvin, and Parker this year. If not, I say it's time to start shopping Williams yesterday.

while I wouldn't turn down a good offer for Williams right now, I wouldn't make it a priority to move him until Gray or Cavalli or both are ready to rejoin the rotation. I don't think he's turning into a pumpkin.

I kind of would like to talk to AA after this series and say, "hey, with Acuna out and you needing some rotation plug-ins, we are open to dealing Williams and Rosario or Thomas for some pieces that will help in the 2026 and beyond time frame. A bopper would be nice."

Maybe put a package together to get David McCabe from the Braves.

Thinking about our rotation depth right now:

1. Gore
2. Williams
3. Irvin
4. Parker
5. Corbin
6. Gray
7. Rutledge
8. Herz
9. Lord
10. Alvarez
11. Lara
12. Adon
13. Ward

Rizzo has some flexibility to make some moves given the depth. Lord and Alvarez are dominating at AA. Rutledge, Adon, and Ward are all inconsistent at AAA. Andry Lara has been lights-out so far since getting promoted to AA as well (but only 3 starts).
