Someone watched too much Bull Durham:

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/41238109/sources-twins-cut-derek-bender-catcher-told-opposing-hitters-incoming-pitch

That is the weirdest thing I've read recently. That could be the end of his career that never really got started.

We don't have a baseball coverage / news / blogs thread, so this is probably the best place to note that one of the more popular sites for analysis and stats is going partially behind a paywall.

Fangraphs will still allow free access to a lot of its stat pages, but it's articles are going to be available for members-only.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/why-were-moving-our-articles-to-a-metered-paywall/

Appelman:
Quote
Beginning today, we’ll be moving our articles on both FanGraphs and RotoGraphs to a metered paywall. Readers will get 10 free articles per rolling 30 days; if you go over that and would like to continue reading, you’ll be required to become a FanGraphs Member.

Our player pages, leaderboards, and other data tools, as well as RosterResource, The Board, and our glossary, will remain available for unlimited use to all of our readers.

...

When I think about where FanGraphs sits in today’s media landscape, there are a lot of things that make us an outlier. We are a 100% independent small business that has 14 full-time employees. Everyone who does any work for FanGraphs receives compensation. We don’t focus on chasing clicks. We don’t participate in SEO schemes. We don’t work with sportsbooks or gambling entities. We are a baseball site staffed by baseball experts for baseball fans and experts.

Ad revenue has become too unpredictable for budgeting. Also takes a shot at the big sources of ad revenue, with trackers, targeting, selling data, or, as he says " it exploits your data to take revenue out of the hands of small publishers and put it in the coffers of the largest, most profitable companies in the world."

For me, I've become addicted to Roster Resource and playing with the game logs and splits tools, which will still be in front of the paywall. That said, I'm a member for the writing, and always try to post a reply when a formerly well-beered englishman who once lived in Houston drops by.

Yeah I'm a subscriber to both Fangraphs and Effectively Wild. I'm probably in the minority on this but I prefer navigating their stats pages than Baseball Ref's. Would suck to lose them.

Mariner's player gets picked off at third after jumping out of the way of a flying bat (no, it wasn't Robles):

Tigers calling up Jackson Jobe, the top pitching prospect in all of baseball.  Has been absolutely dominant at AAA this year. Passan says they'll have him working out of the bullpen for the final playoff push.

The Pirates DFA'd Rowdy Tellez today. He has 421 PAs. If he made it to 425 he was due a $200k bonus.

That's awful.

Final game in Oakland is today, and the park appears to be sold out (though the upper sections are still closed.

Scott Van Pelt's commentary on Oakland sports is worth watching:
https://x.com/SportsCenter/status/1839512607314657598

heck of a turnout for the final game, and so for some odd reason they will now play in a minor league ballpark in Sacramento for 3 years.

Arizona NHL hockey did something similar...and the Coyotes likely had a higher salary and lower revenue stream to deal with...

Nobody does these odd things without there being a pot of gold out there...or at least the promise of one...

Oakland has now lost three major sports franchises. Not easy to do. The owner is a mess but the city has messed up big time over and over.

True. And the moves have certainly worked out for the Raiders and the Warriors. The A's to Oakland is still a long way off.

fwiw, I'm in New England this weekend so I hear some Boston sports talk. The Red Sox needs sound almost exactly like the Nats: righty bat, front line starter, rebuild bullpen. Thought is, if Henry is willing to spend money, deal Casas in a package for a front-line starter (maybe Seattle), and perhaps sign Bregman & move Devers to first. Otherwise, perhaps getting into bidding on Burnes, but still leaves them needing a RH bat.  Someone mentioned Soto, and, despite being a lefty, the guests said in the old days, no question they would bid, but the Sox don't aim that high any more.
