In 1993 MLB expanded to Miami. In 1998 they expanded to the Tampa area. I had been to the Tampa stadium a few times. Today I went to the Marlins stadium. Shame on MLB for expanding to these two stadiums before Washington. Even though Tampa has a good team year in and year out nobody goes. Nobody goes to the Marlins stadium either. The Marlins didn't even sell any upper deck tickets today. I don't know if they usually do.
This year the Rays are 28th in attendance and the Marlins 29th. Only the A's are behind them.

Danny Jansen has the opportunity to do something unique. He was recently traded from Toronto to Boston. On August 26, Toronto and Boston are set to resume a suspended game. When that game was suspended, Jansen was at bat for the Jays. He will likely be the catcher for Boston since the Red Sox player who was catching in that game was DFA'd to make room for Jansen.

So, he will likely be not only the first player to appear for both teams in the same game, but also the first player to both hit and catch in the same at bat.

Trout is out for the year.   That contract could end up worse than Rendon.

Mega contracts are such a bad risk for organizations.  There are much better ways to spend money.

He'll be 33 in a couple of days. Does he already qualify for the HOF or does he have to have a couple more productive seasons?

He's still a first ballot HOF'er 3x MVP (and very arguably should have 2-3 more); career .991 OPS at a premium defensive position.

He posted a letter to fans saying that he re-tore his meniscus.  Has there ever been a better player with worse luck on a worse team for his career than Trout?

Ernie Banks?

I thought of Dick Allen, with numbers closer to Trout than Banks are, but who played for multiple bad teams.  I saw him play in the early '70's.  It's nothing short of criminal that he's not in the HOF...that's his worst luck.

I think Trout takes the cake...

Hear hear on Dick Allen.  He is more than deserving. Travesty.

At least he was present for getting his number retired.

One might contend what may resemble a hall of sports writers — some of whom may seem to relish head games and power plays — has seemed to discredit itself on an ever-increasing basis. We can figure out what a Hall of Famer looks like without their theatrics.

I’m not sure why anybody aside from those with Rendon-type career aspirations would ever want to sign with that organization.

It's LA and they are willing to overpay.

Jarren Duran suspended two games by Red Sox for using homophobic slur

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/08/12/jarren-duran-slur-suspended-red-sox/

Quote
The incident occurred during Sunday’s 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros, when television microphones picked up a fan behind home plate heckling Duran. Between pitches, the 27-year-old turned his head toward the fan and told him to shut up before directing a slur his way. TV microphones picked up his retort, which aired on the NESN broadcast. Duran and the team apologized in a statement Sunday night, with Duran lamenting his use of “a truly horrific word.”

...

“It was just a heckler heckling me the entire game. I just let the moment get the best of me. I just said something I shouldn’t have said,” said Duran, who added that he apologized to Astros catcher Yainer Diaz and home plate umpire Jordan Baker afterward.

...

“[MLB] is very inclusive. I don’t think my actions should represent what the team and MLB represent,” Duran said. “It was just a bad moment on my part. I’m owning up to it and apologizing for it. But there was no intent to harm anyone or any organization in any way. It was just a dumb mistake on my part that I’m going to learn from.”

The 2 game suspension mirrors 2 games received by Matt Joyce, Kevin Pillar, and Jason Motte.

I'm watching the Braves/Giants game. The score is 0-0 in the bottom of the 5th. The leadoff batter for the Giants hits one to the left of the 3rd baseman. Not a real hard shot. The 3rd baseman dives and knocks it down with his glove after one hop. He picks it up and from his knees throws a fairly soft two hopper to the first baseman. He gets the guy out and it's not that close. I figured how in the world did the batter not beat that out.

They showed a reply of the batter going to first. He glances at the play as he's going down the first base line. He doesn't run hard the whole time. The two Giant announcers decide he thought the third baseman caught it and that's why he didn't run hard. If he thought he caught it why did he keep going? Also it was a one hopper to third and not a short hop.

I wonder if that Oriole announcer getting suspended last year for saying something the Oriole owner didn't think was complimentary was a wakeup call to all local announcers never criticize the home team players.

It's not TV, but Charlie and Dave are kind of famous for their criticism of bonehead plays. Certainly the Nook Logan call, but I think they were on Ruiz a week or so ago for a real bad AB. Frandsen sometimes sounds like he's making excuses, but at other times he really gets on guys for bad ABs and stupid running decisions. I think the Os thing was more of a one off.

Dude better get used to hearing "TENNIS RACKET! TENNIS RACKET!" every time he bats on the road, because that's really what he's earned himself with this silliness.

I'm dumb, but was that what the a-hole in the stands was yelling at him? Duran is leading the AL in doubles and triples and I think 2d in XBH to Judge. Duran's earned some hassles with his reaction, but I hope the fan is not made out to be some sort of hero now. I'm sure if the Red Sox (or Astros if it was in Houston) pulled his tickets for another episode of being a jerk, he'd hold a press conference and claim retaliation.

If Charlie and/or Dave go it's because they want to. They are an easy listen and the best. Better than Ron Menchine and Shelby Whitfield lol.
