Tennis 2024
« Topic Start: January 18, 2024, 09:44:16 AM »
First major of the year down under. I have ESPN+ and they basically show all the matches.  Was watching two of the high men’s seeds last night.  Ruud and Zverev both taken to fifth set tiebreakers but survived.  Matches started at different times but somehow ended both at about the same time which made it difficult to watch.  Medvedev looks like he will lose down two sets to zero now.

Only American male left is Taylor Fritz who has made it to the quarterfinals.  Unfortunately he faces Djokovic there.  So that will end.  Coco is the only woman left and appears to be cruising to another championship.

Escaped that one in five sets and now another five set win for the semis.  Alcaraz and Zverev going at it now.

So Fritz beat the German?

Ja.

The quarterfinals in ten women’s side almost ended up being a UVA affair. Emma Navarro who won a NCAA championship while at Virginia beat Coco Gauff and is actually a favorite tomorrow. Unfortunately fellow UVA player Danielle Collins lost today. Navarro is the only American left. Can’t remember last time USA had more men in a major QF than women.

I wouldn’t count Djokovic out yet from winning another major. He’s basically playing a month after knee surgery. But it will b e tougher. Alcaraz and Sinner are top notch. And still young.

Five American men ranked in the top twenty seeds at the US Open.  But can anyone make a run?  Probably not.  Tiafoe had a tougher time than expected in his first round match.

Tiafoe and Shelton is quite a slug fest. Unfortunately winner will probably play Djokovic. Taylor Fritz has also looked very good through three rounds.

Alcaraz going down in straight sets was...unexpected.

First time since 2002 that one of the Big Three has not won a major. An era has ended.

Djokovic losing is good news for the Americans left. Alcaraz lost yesterday. Zverev in trouble now. Could be three of top four seeds out.

Tiafoe and Fritz into the quarterfinals and both have good shots their next match. Tommy Paul will try the same but facing the number one seed tomorrow.

Taylor Fritz upsets Zverev and moves into the semis. Go Tiafoe. If he wins we would have an all American semi and first American make finalist since 2006.

Ema Navarro into the women’s semis. Pegula plays tomorrow for her chance.

Tiafoe does it. So we will have an American finalist.

What are the seedings that are left? The #1 is still in it, right?

Yes Sinner is still in it and looks unbeatable. He plays the 25 seed so should cruise into the finals.

On the women’s side can say that about Sabalenka. Jessica Pegula makes her first slam final. As the daughter of the Bills’ owner one would think she would end up with the runner-up trophy.

Wide right!
