Hell...I missed that Gramme Edge died...in 2021!

We saw them in 2016...they still sounded great, though Gramme had an apprentice on stage along side him doing the harder stuff...

Never saw them in concert.  I think Justin Heyward is still touring.

Here's the classic 'Colo(u)r Me Pop' (precursor to 'The Old Grey Whistle Test') performance (BBC 2 - September 1968).

Bernard Hill, at age 79.

He played one of the most iconic characters in the history of UKTV drama - Yosser Hughes; a Scouser whose life falls apart due to chronic unemployment. Even those not even born when 'Boys From The Blackstuff' aired know of Yosser Hughes and 'gis-a-job'.

Steve Albini, 61  :(

Had no idea who he was.  I have a friend however who does, and she wrote this.  She shows a picture but not sure how to post that here.

I took this photo of Steve Albini in Abbey Road Studios in London in 1997.   I was in London for a my photoshow with Pat Graham at the ICA: “People from DC in Bands with their Favorite Mode of Transport by Cynthia and the Same People Live in their Band by Pat”.  Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were recording at Abbey Road and Steve was engineering their record. Steve invited me over to check it out late at night when Plant and Page were gone.  Steve invited me to be on the guest list of a small show in London where Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were performing for a benefit.  I arrived at the show and found Steve at a table with Robert Plant.  He introduced me to him, and I am not sure what I said, but might have said something like, “really a pleasure to meet you, I am a fan of Led Zeppelin.” (I mean what DO YOU say to someone like that?) Anyway, the most amazing part of the trip was going to the bathroom.  I wished I had a recording device, as the women were speaking in all sorts of British accents, they were older, very skinny, face lifts and make up, reconstructed noses, the whole nine yards. They were walking rock ’n’ roll history as far as I saw it.  I still wished I had a tape recorder.

His bands Shellac and Rapeman played at dc space consistently in DC.  He always came by Dischord for a visit when he was in town.   He was a core figure in the punk/DIY scene- building his recording studio and making so many great bands (both small local bands or well, not)  sound freaking excellent.  In a time of vinyl recordings he brought strong heavy full sounds that I thought could never be heard through the needle and into the speakers of my stereo.   The last time I spoke with him was 10 years ago to ask him to be in a sound exhibition at Artisphere, of which he turned down.  He did things his way, with passion, humor and generosity.  Steve loved this photo and sent magazines to me to purchase the rights to use the image when they interviewed him.  Steve left this world too soon, and it is a huge loss for us all.   This is a sad moment for so many.  RIP Steve Albini and thank you.

One of the few people, in the music business, who didn't look to rip-off the bands he worked with - he charged a flat-fee, for his work, and never claimed subsequent royalties.

Saxophonist David Sanborn. Played the Sax on Bowie’s Young Americans.  Also loved his solo at the end of this Eagles song.

I have a hard time figuring out the Nobel committee....last year's winner (Jon Fosse) wrote in an obscure Norwegian dialect and literally nobody had read has crap.  Still hasn't as far as I can tell.

Then you've got Munro, Coetzee, Gordimer, Lessing, etc, and it could be the Whitbread/Booker prize

Dabney Coleman, age 92.

Played many roles, including my favorite as the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot in 9 to 5.

The Literature prize does seem to be the most - ahem -  wayward, shall we say - remember the controversy around Dylan winning it... ;)
