They are over 3 million in attendance. Second overall and third by average. Not sure what their tv deal is.
Given their market, its small. But the point remains, no team is handicapped by money

It looks like the Mets could of used a Parra or Howie. Pham says the 2023 Mets are the least hardest working players he's ever played with.

They were one of the teams to lose their tv deal this year in the DSG bankruptcy.   They were in the second half of a 1.2 billion/20 year deal.   Those deals are usually structured to start lower and escalate, so probably lost 70ish million/year going forward, but took over the rights for themselves and quickly negotiated similiar coverage.   Bally's wouldn't have given up the deal if it wasn't losing money, so they are somewhere probably in the 40-50 million/year and declining.   They put half in the revenue sharing pool anyway, so not a huge hit.   Probably take in 150 million for local tv and national revenue sharing pool.   Add in ticket sales (which they only keep half of), maybe 100 million?   So like 250-300 million would be a good revenue guess.   I doubt they are in the black with their payroll, luxury tax payments and other expenses.

I'm not knowledgeable about these things but I guess you have to add in concessions and parking for a nearly sold out crowd every night. I suppose all the fans need a Soto, Machado, Bogaerts, or Tatis jersey. Not sure how much that brings in though.

I'm not exactly sure about merch sales, but it's a weird structure.   The licensing deals pay a percentage to the league that is split between teams equally and players equally.   For jerseys sold in the stadium stores, the retail markup goes to the teams.   There is money generated in the stadium for sure, but it is probably close to a washout against lease payments, front office salaries, etc.

In mid to low market teams, there is very little incentive to spend to make more money.   The expenses are paid directly by the team, and incremental revenue is mostly pooled with the league.

Yeah but the revenue sharing is also a disincentive for low market teams to spend more. MLB socialism.

Yeah, that's basically what I was saying.   Spending money to make money doesn't make much sense when they have to pay the full expense but only get half of the incremental income.

It's all pretty icky when you see a smallish market owner get the tax payers to fund their stadium, they get their 150+ million share from the revenue pool, spend little on the on-field product and profit (and the value of their team grows at a 10-15% rate).  How do I get in on this racket?

In the case of most of these owners, be the son/daughter of an actual billionaire, and then tell everyone you worked hard for what you have.

I loved being told by Hal Steinbrenner that no one was getting a Christmas bonus or raise on the same day they signed Chris freaking Capuano to a $5 million contract only to cut him a month later.

Don’t look now but the Padres have won 9 straight and are four back in the wild card. Just a one percent chance per fangraphs as they would need to pass four teams.

Szymborski playing with the numbers. Basically, they projections suggest they really need to lost at most 1 game to have better than a 10% chance. Schedule is favorable to make up ground, but it's still quite a long shot.

This late surge will convince them to stay pat this offseason and go for again next year. They have to do something about Snell and Hader though.

It's a weird schedule with so many interleague games to end the season.   Arizona plays their last 9 games against AL teams.   Could have been a fun finish if Padres had a series vs them and/or the Cubs left.

Good chance Preller stays, and might still be paired with Bob Melvin. Who are the current Padres prospects that Rizzo might steal?

Interesting Josh Hader was making sure he didn't get used too much. He didn't want to mess up his free agency.

Speaking of Hader and someone else who plays out there now, this was four years ago today:

Machado underwent elbow surgery to repair a tendon. Out 4-6 months.

Man, I didn't plan on spending 15 minutes watching that video, but I couldn't turn it off.  That was awesome!
