Rizzo's defense of Martinez was to blame the fans for over reacting, he said that Davey's comments "ruffled feathers" among the fans while denying any unrest in the clubhouse. Maybe Rizzo should look at all the empty blue seats around the ballpark and realized that when you ruffle feathers the birds fly away.

Congrats on actually being able to listen to Rizzo’s propaganda.  Someone in Nats PR needs to get an interpreter so we don’t have to listen to his endless um’s and ah’s.  His future clearly does not include public speaking fees.

Here's the ruffled feathers comment:

This is the one where he takes shots at the other bottom feeders, this is the one that convinced me that the Junkies do a pre-interview so that he knows the questions before going live.

I think those questions were honestly pretty fair and firm by the Junkies. I think they were obvious questions and probably a conversation Rizzo has had internally.

It is true that Rizzo has canned managers midseason and forced coaching changes on the major league staff. Either (a) Rizzo thinks Martinez is irreplaceable or (b) Rizzo understands at this point they win together or the lose together. My assumption is (b).

Pretty lame of Rizzo in trying to gaslight everyone on when the rebuild started. Nobody who is being honest thinks the team was actually trying to make the playoffs on opening day 2022.

I believe Rizzo thought at the deadline in 2021 that he was clearing space for a push starting in 2022. Then the 2022 offseasn happened and it became clear the Nationals had gone small market.

Even if so, it's inaccurate of Rizzo to claim the rebuild didn't begin until the Soto trade.

The rebuild hasn't happened yet...all we've had is a salary dump for the past 5 seasons...

I didn't see the quote. If he said they shifted from a reload to a rebuild when they traded Soto and Bell, I think that's right. I look at the 2021 trade deadline deals as both in part a salary dump but also as an effort to get quick to the majors guys. I just look at the guys they targeted in 2021 - Adams, Thompson, Ruiz, Gray, Thomas - as a lot of guys who would step right into the MLB roster. Aldo Ramirez was just a pitching prospect, but Schwarber wasn't able to play for most of August so his value was depressed at the deadline. The Harrison / Gomes deal was not for immediate help. Sure, they could have gotten more for Scherzer and Turner had they eaten cost, but really the other guys dealt were expiring contracts more than salary dumps.

Going into the offseason, I think they thought they'd make a run at Soto and see if they could keep him at a price that would have allowed for signings. When that didn't happen, it became pull the plug.

They tried a rebuild. That's the Soto trade and the purpose behind the short-term vet signings like Candelario and Harvey. It just is that now it looks like the rebuild may have failed because the trade products are starting to hit their big money time while the system products are just showing up.

This is what he said and then he even caught himself and acknowledged that it kind of started the deadline before but then in earnest with the Soto trade.

Stepping back, it seems like the team has tried to build entirely through prospects, whether the prospects came from trades or from the draft. The draft-path has been tougher since the new CBA makes revenue-sharing teams, like Washington, draft no better than 10th every other year. Baltimore, maybe the model of "build by the draft", could tank, cynically, year after year.

Of all off-seasons, this last one should have been the time to spend.

As House plays well and Crews returns soon, and if Cavalli makes the majors, this could still be a respectable team.

This team needs a lot more than a few rookies to turn things around. James Wood has played beyond expectations, the team is still 13 games under, and none of those guys is set to have the impact Wood has.

"Building through the draft" became less easy when by the end of the 2000's, and certainly into the early 2010's, when GMs were bullied into valuing minor leaguers and teams got to the point where now they may overvalue prospects versus established talent.

It's draft and smart free agent signings.

A lousy first half should put everyone with the Nationals on notice

A disappointing first 81 games brings scrutiny to everyone involved with the Nationals, from ownership to player development to coaches.

He's carrying out the "fans last" operating philosophy of Lernerball.  Don't worry about winning, just BS the fans and make absurd, irrelevant statements about the We are Family Pirates.

His new PR spin is to split the bullpen into "A" and "B" with the "B" part being the one that just needs guys like Law and Mason Thompson to come back from injury.

Implied they'd get the hitting technology machine Nussbaum wrote about in the Post.

Did not bring up when the rebuild would end, that was clickbait.

Is seriously impossible to listen to.  Between all his defensive spin and all the "ums" and "ahs", he's a brutal listen.

The team has talent but needs supplemental adds through FA. The "rebuild" should be when the owners sell and the FO is gutted.
