$30M of new spending should not be viewed in a vacuum. Not only is this new spending only after Corbin's contract is off the books, but the Nationals have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball even after all that. We should be looking at available luxury tax space, not gross new spending.

Exactly. This is not a commitment from ownership to winning or even trying to be competitive.

Agree, but it's remarkable how badly Rizzo has used the limited dollars he has been given.

Something is just wrong.  This team is supposed to be built for speed, but has a weak 71% stolen base success rate.  Meanwhile, the Rays have stolen nearly 40 more bases, and with an 83% success rate.  It's not just the lack of money, it's the poor culture that doesn't innovate, keeps people like Rizzo around because he's a PR tool, but with zero creativity and an awful eye for talent.

This is my point. If you told me preseason the production we’d be getting out our returning players and Rizzo signed $30+ mil (almost $40 counting Williams/Finnegan) of incoming players, I would think we’d be above .500.

This season is weird in that it simultaneously showing Rizzo did a lot of things right in minor league talent but he’s bombed on major league adds. Season has a lot of time to go, but I’m slowly going more negative than positive on this seasons grade.

Who exactly do you think you're getting for 30 million? We knew going in to this season we needed a starting first baseman, a starting pitcher, and at least two relievers. If you thought you were going to find an addition 10 wins out 30 million, you were delusional.

BTW, we haven't "added" 30 million. We've added about 5-7 million.

So by letting Rizzo oversee this draft and make the first selection, we are basically committed to him.  I want to hang myself.

You want to hire a new GM less than a month before the draft? And what, replace him with an internal candidate?

I want the entire regime out of town on the next train.  No internal candidates!  We need outside eyes.  It can't be worse than Seaver King, Dylan Crews, Elijah Green, Cade Cavalli, jackson Rutledge, Mason Denaburg, SETH ROMERO, Carter Kieboom, Andrew Stevenson, Erick Fedde, Jake Johansen, and so on....  I would lean on the side of giving him credit for Brady House although he still hasn't cracked an egg.  Crews is still TBD.

Slate, I would trust you to make the pick before I would allow Rizzo to touch it.

For this draft we're damned if we fire him and damned if we don't. This has to be the end of the line for Rizzo.

No one is letting any of their people interview, let alone get hired, less than a month out from the draft.

The Lane Thomas for Clemmey / Tena / Rameriz trade is looking good for Rizzo. Thomas has posted .153 / .213 / .208 with 1HR in 72 ABs so far.

I would take a random draft guy at BP or Fangraphs over this regime. Just picking a random draft ranking and going by it couldn’t be any worse.

It didn't make the team any better, and Clemmey is worthless with all the ball fours he throws.

Hmm, Keith Law rates him as our #5 prospect and says he has #2 or #3 starter potential. BBA just moved him from #6 to #4 on our top-30 list.

Seems odd that they'd do that for a "worthless" prospect.

So you’re saying Rizzo already does that? Then why keep him

Maybe three relievers who weren't so bad they had to be cut before June, a $9 million back of the rotation arm who we could hope was healthy, and not a DH candidate without a history of hitting home runs who we expected to come in and be a HR hitter. I didn't expect 10 more wins, but at this point the three bullpen arms and Bell are all net negatives.

And in my post I intentionally said "$30+ million in incoming". You know what I meant. I have posted I knew the spending coincided with the drop on the Corbin contract. Don't make strawman arguments.

Disagree. You can let him run the draft and still can him end of the season. Then the new GM comes in and doesn't have the headache of needing to defend a first overall selection in a draft very, very weak at the top.

Galdi on the podcast officially called the rebuild a failure.  We now need Barry or Boswell to put that in print.  Do it.

I did not see this coming last fall. I thought they were about 3 pieces away from being in the wild card mix.

I plan on getting my vision checked.

I used to think it was the best show on DC radio around 2000.  I remember Don and Mike imitating them and their Maryland accents "Hey Cakes, it's a shooeew", "EB, you are hurrrting".  But now they just toss softball questions to Rizzo and let him um and uh propaganda for five minutes.   The content is bad enough and then Rizzo has a harder time finishing a sentence than he does building a winning baseball team.
