Ian MacDonald (@ian_mac5) has a thread looking at the Nats' top prospects from 2019. It's depressing.

https://x.com/ian_mac5/status/1779557863523774533

1. Robles - Never lived up to the hype
2. Kieboom - Ditto
3. Garcia Jr. - Getting there
4. Denaburg - Bust in Low-A
5. Will Crowe - Some time in the majors, now in Korea
6. Tim Cate - AAA - maybe an injury call up at best
7. Yasel Antuna - FA
8. Israel Pineda - Bust
9. Sterling Sharp - Independent league
10. Greg Canning - out of baseball

And it only gets worse except for the guy who was our #17 prospect that year: Jake Irvin and #19: Tanner Rainey

Isn't that basically saying we won the world series (and made playoff 5 of 8 years), and ended up with an empty cupboard of prospects?   If so, I'm ok with that.

More so that the prospects didn't work out. Post-2019 the team was supposed to replace Rendon with Kieboom, have Garcia take over 2B, and have Robles emerge into a top CF. If all that had happened, the team would look very different right now.

had that happened, no tank. Probably can't draft House, won't trade for Wood / Hassell / Abrams/ Gore / Susana. No Green. Vaquero is your best prospect, although Yoyo would be available if we had a 1st last year.

Why have such low expectations?  One reason other teams don't throw away half their seasons, or retain a GM who can't draft and develop, is because DC fans will take whatever scraps you give them.  I get the whole Senators moving thing, but at some point Nats fans have to stop acting like abused children.

Curious as to the Nats farm ranking at that point in time. Cant find them on the MLB rankings then. They were not too 15.  But not bottom ten.

In a vacuum, I'm fine with that.

But with benefit of hindsight, it isn't like there was a lot of low minors talent ready to break through. And the 2019 MLB draft for Nats may end up have Amos Willingham, Alu, or Rutledge as its best pickup. And unless you love Jake Irvin, the 2018 and 2017 drafts were also disasters.

I don't expect the Nationals at the end of a "win now" stretch over multiple years to have had a top 10 farm system. But it wasn't an issue of trading everything out. The talent acquisition starting around 2016 just became a disaster. There's a reason that after multiple fire sales the system was pretty average heading into 2022 and 2023. The drafting has gotten a bit better and the Soto trade is looking like best of a bad situation, but Rizzo owns the disrepair the Farm System fell into during the late 2010's.

Rizzo bobblehead upcoming.  I know several folks here who will be making a special trip to the park for their favorite GM.

The last time the Nats did a Rizzo giveaway they had to roll in giant trash bins near the entrances for people to dump them.

This is how a professional GM behaves. Unlike Rizzo, who'll never admit a mistake and will deflect, finger point, and get defensive all day long, John Lynch takes on responsibility for the contract issues the Niners are having with Aiyuk and former WTF Trent Williams.  Also never heard Lynch justify the bad seasons when he first showed up, or the SB losses.  He doesn't try to insult fans intelligence in order to defend the owner like Rizzo does, and Niners owner Jed York has had some very bad moments since he took over the team.

Revisiting the Soto trade:

https://bellyupsports.com/2024/07/the-washington-nationals-great-train-robbery/

Clear that Rizzo won the trade. He bamboozled San Diego even more than when he talked his way into a Tampa-San Diego trade and walked away with Trea Turner and Joe Ross. The Padres flopped with Soto, and we Gore and Abrams have lifted the Nats. Wood looks ready. Susana has learned how to pitch with his mere 100 mph fastball. Hassell III has suffered from his wrist injury, but he might be a sort of icing on the cake if he gets healthy.

Cheers for Rizzo.

Cheers for Rizzo.

Yes, cheers for five years of tanking and PR when the org had already thrown away five seasons from 2006 to 2010.  And cheers for having to make trades to make up for atrocious drafting and development that he never was held accountable for.  And those poor Padres!  16 games over .500 with a 95% chance of making the playoffs.

But we've got the best clown show in the league!  Next season it might open for Journey or Def Leppard.

The best thing about this is Lynch is very similar to Rizzo. Much better involving trades than drafting. Lynch has blown a litany of first round picks.

If he loses those guys then no one will care what he says.  I don;t understand the Aiyuk situation.  Sounded like a trade was arranged and then he backed out.  What's his plan?

Agreed.  And he revamped the development organization.   Really curious how this plays out next year (2024 picks and player improvement).

Lynch got Kittle in the 5th, Purdy in the 7th, Bosa, Deebo, Aiyuk, Fred Warner in the 3rd, he's drafted all the top players on the team except CMC and Trent Williams.  When he busted with Javon Kinlaw and Trey Lance he was open about it and didn’t once double down on his mistake.  He was very open to Kyle’s view that Purdy as a rookie in camp was better than Jimmy G and Lance.  He doesn’t double down on mistakes like Rizzo, he admits them.
