Also hit. Ten game hitting streak and batting almost .300. Would like to see him get his first MLB HR soon. Maybe today?

The one thing I have noticed is that opposing pitchers are able to get first pitch strikes often leading to an 0-2 count which doesn’t seem to phase him. H seems to have a pretty good eye and his K rate is not high (20%) including today.

:old: Denard Span would have caught that in his back pocket  :old:
It's a different era, so K rates are higher, but do you Brett Butler as a comparable? He's got the ~10% BB rate of Butler in his 20s. Butler of course walked more than he K'd over his career, but I could see Young's K rate maybe dropping to a well below league average level like 13%. Current league average is ~23%, so his 17% is pretty good. Steals will be a big part of his game. Young is good defensively, but so was Butler up to his early 30s.

Praise from Dave Roberts.  He's talking about the team, but Young is a major part of this.  https://twitter.com/TalkNats/status/1701016785972306430

When I wrote my comment Young K 9 times in 45 AB’s. Isn’t that 20%?

I think more often you use plate appearances so you have a more consistent baseline between walk and k rates. After today, he has an 8.9 BB% and 16.1 K%. That's equal to the 25th best qualified hitter (Yandy Diaz) out of 138.  18th%. Small sample, but a good sign. And the BB% is better than MLB average too (8.6%).

I’m more concerned with his recent streak of being 0 for 14 starting with the Bucs series.

he's not striking out too much and he's drawing walks. The hits should drop in

that's going to be interesting. I don't think that it's a lock that they pick up the $3.3 million option on Robles.

I agree, especially with his back. But I don't think they sign a FA, Crews isn't ready, and Call and Young don't look like Mlb starters

Yea but they are inexpensive and that is what counts.

Robles is a litmus test for ownsership. Nothing Young has done or shown would give him the starting job in 2024 over a healthy Robles. Its only 3 million bucks.

Picking up that option is chump change. It's even less than $3 million net of the minimum salary that would be owed his replacement (assuming he doesn't spend next year of the 60 day IL). The only other reason not to would be if  they were committed to bringing up the best performing, higher level prospect if Young / Call are flailing next April.

Or if ownership wanted to save 2+ million

Afraid of that and that they will just waste a year of his service time on a non contending. team.  Can’t keep him down forever but he did not exactly tear it up in Double A.  They need to do what makes sense long term rather than trying to sell a few more tickets next year.

He's not going to break camp with the MLB club but he should be up by memorial day. His underlying metrics in AA are more than fine so I expect him to smash in spring and early-season AA.

I'm not sure if this is turning into a broader discussion of "Jabob Young's Audition and the Centerfield Conundrum" but there's a lot of moving parts here.

I mean, it is an audition, but if we're evaluating strictly on performance, he is starting the season in Triple A.

I'm also hoping that Blankenhorn doesn't get lost in this end of the season audition stretch. I'd like to see him in left, at least against RHP, rather than the default Alu in left, Vargas at 2nd, and Kieboom at 3rd. Blankenhorn average is down, but his contact quality and plate discipline are good. It's too quick to write him off. I think his situation plays into the CF situation going forward because, were we to sign a corner OF (like Canha), I could see Thomas in CF for a while. His bat certainly plays in CF if he has the glove. Lots of moving parts.

Oh, for fun and amusement, look at the xwOBA sort here:
 https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&type=8&season=2023&month=0&season1=2023&ind=0&team=24&qual=20&sortcol=16&sortdir=default&pagenum=1

Take a look at the cluster of names at .315 and above at the top. Then look at the bottom for CF/LF/2b/3rd candidates.
