Ranking The MLB Owners
« Topic Start: September 07, 2023, 04:13:49 PM »
This is an article from June of this year on Stadium Talk ranking the MLB owners. Peter Angelos is ranked last which I agree with, although it's actually John Angelos running things now who is potentially worse. Ted Learner is ranked 8th but is obviously now Mark Learner who seems questionable to me with the Rizzo dealings. Number 1 is John Henry of Boston.

One ranking which seems ridiculous is the Braves owner, Terry McGuirk, is ranked 18th. The Braves seem to be the best run organization in MLB.

Henry's teams were able to win world series with very different mixes of players and GM styles. The ballpark improvements were very well done from the business side. They need a payoff from the Bloom era beyond one ALCS loser to show that the current situation is building a winning team rather than just budget management and disinterest.

These write-ups seem in many cases to be three or four years out of date given that it's a June 2023 article. Terrible.

Scrolling through the article is it of course clickbait. Some of those rankings are designed to provoke comments back.

The one on the Braves is definitely outdated. Some of the rankings on the worst owners stand the test of time though.

The Braves are owned by Liberty Media which is publicly held. McGuirk isn’t really the owner but he is CEO.

I think they named him because somebody has to give direction and have the final say, presumably him.

Right. But not a fun target for incoherent vitriol.

When I read about each owner it makes me feel there are some really lousy owners out there in it just for the bucks. The Pirates owner for one stands out.

Letting Mookie walk showed that they were no longer serious about winning at all costs. I know a couple of people who turned on Henry at that point

Yep, in March of this year Forbes ranked the Red Sox as the 3rd most profitable. It ranked the Orioles as the 4th most profitable. This and the $600 million Maryland offer isn't enough.

Nats were 10th.

yes. That did them in immeasurably. Didn't help when he bought the Penguins. Got booed at a Pens-Bruins NHL game at Fenway. Bill Simmons, whatever you think of him, called it the worst trade in franchise history, worse than Bagwell for Larry Anderson, Sparky Lyle for Danny Cater, and any other in recent memory. One of the things that makes it linger in people's minds is that Verdugo and Wong are still around as daily reminders.

Red Sox were saying his focus was on Liverpool, but even the Liverpool fans are turning on him because he can't compete with the sovereign national funds.

How goes it? Everyone doing alright? Was chatting about the Rizzo news, and figured I'd do a check-in myself. Still in Colorado or I'd take you up on that offer.

Re: the Rox, the guy willing goes by Dick, what more do you need to know?

We've had some comings and goings and a few disappearances, but we are chugging along at a lot lower volume than we used be at in terms of posts. The top of the Clubhouse lists a few passings. The rebuild is fun to discuss. it's made our "Farm/Follow the Prospect" threads a lot more active as folks pay special attention to our AA team, where several prime prospects are playing. "twas fun watching LSU too knowing either Skenes or Crews would be available. Other than that, it's a fan forum, so we are still bipolar about guys we've picked up since the 2021 trade deadline aand who are now regulars.

We'll still be around, so feel free to check in, at least when there's the steel-cage match between the Blake Street posse and Half Street crew.

These are almost certainly bullcrap rankings.

The Rockies' owners being dead in the middle, for instance (higher than the Braves' ownership somehow??) - that's crazy.  Here's a good video that zooms in on the Nolan Arenado extension and really digs into the Rockies' abject mismanagement in recent years:
