Nice article on Herz.

https://www.mlb.com/news/dj-herz-preparing-for-first-spring-training-with-nationals

He's a likable kid, has the humility of an 8th round pick and has put up comparable numbers to Cavalli throughout his minors career.  If he keeps it up in Rochester, no reason he couldn't come up mid season.

higher K and BB rates for the most part, but some better FIPs, especially after his initial exposure to a level. Cavalli threw more innings at AAA in 2022, but then blew out his elbow.

Mega good outing tonight. Five innings, five Ks and just a solo HR allowed.

Herz now has 4 starts and 17.1 IP at AAA. 3.12 ERA, 17Ks, .172 Opponents Batting Average. Biggest :smh: is the BBs - 13.  Hasn't really paid for the BBs due to just 1 HR and the sub-Medoza average against.

Lot of walks.

Ceiling is Blake Snell or Robbie Ray. Could easily end up as a reliever too.

more or less, to be a starter, he probably needs to cut that BB rate down to 3 per 9 IP while maintaining at least  9 K/9. If his K rate is higher, he can relieve if his K rate creeps up to 4 per 9

Sounds like he'll be a major leaguer.  Question is back end of the rotation or a bullpen guy.  He's got a 70 grade changeup and a 55 fastball.  I've long been a believer in elite changeups being better than elite breaking balls as there are more elite breaking balls than elite changeups.  If he's a reliver, I think he'll be a damn good one.  That for a half season of Candy is a win

I think Tyler Clippard would agree. He made quite the living with a very good changeup with a pedestrian fastball.

https://www.mlb.com/nationals/news/each-club-s-best-picks-from-the-2019-mlb-draft?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

Cubs:
Quote
DJ Herz, LHP (WSH No. 12)
The Cubs whiffed on first-rounder Ryan Jensen and their lone big leaguer to date from the 2019 Draft is 13th-rounder Porter Hodge, who was called up last Friday but has yet to pitch in a game. Sent to the Nationals in the Jeimer Candelario trade last summer, Herz has one of the best changeups in the Minors and the most upside in Chicago's Draft class. He lasted eight rounds as a North Carolina high schooler because of murky signability, landed fourth-round money ($500,000) and has 440 strikeouts in 307 1/3 pro innings while limiting opponents to a .180 average.

gave up a single and got one strikeout in the 6th before coming out. Orlando Ribalta then got an out, gave up a 2-R HR, and another out.

Final line for Herz: 5.1IP, 2H, 1BB, 10Ks, 1ER

Gore-like.

I don't like to slice and dice a season into too small segments, but he's been effective in 5 out of his last 7 starts. The walks have not been a problem in his last 3 starts (5 BB in 15.1 IP, with 23 Ks). It's getting to the point where he's as much in the conversation as the next man up as Gray and Cavalli, just on a sooner timetable.

That is the quintessential Nats start this year. He would fit right in.

interesting that it was the fastball that drew the swing and misses. He pounded the zone with fastballs and cutters. Change had some miss too, but was less in the zone and not chased as much. Still, it kind of is looking like Mitchell Parker a bit where they got to him and figured out how to pound the zone and dodge walks. With Herz, his change is so good I can see that leading to BBs if it is harder to throw for strikes and is not chased. The pitch mix is interesting.
