discussed on the mlb draft thread in The Farm. If a team has a draft pick who wins RoY the following year, they get a draft pick at the end of the first round. If they have a player who finishes 2nd or 3rd in RoY voting the year after they are drafted, the team gets an extra international signing slot.  This is part of the new CBA to encourage teams to bring up their star draftees rather than keep them in the minors to manipulate service time.

So:

Only a draft pick...not Wood. To get the extra pick, does the ROY have to be in his first season after he signs?

Is it only a draft pick that starts the year in the majors?

i don't think so, it's just if they win ROY (or place in the top 3), that can happen even if one doesn't start the year in the majors.

so it still makes sense for the candidate to spend a few weeks in the minors so that he gets < 1 full year service time if he does not win? or is he deemed to have 1 year if he does win?  Either way, I still think making sure he starts after 170 days left in the season as a hedge.

Garrett / Call / Wood for Opening Day.

Do post season games count towards rookie eligibility thresholds?

I think the wording in the CBA is service time is accrued only during a championship baseball season.

That’s their term for regular season. It’s why I quit reading them too many vague terms.

I believe the ROTY and runner-up both get 1 year of service time automatically even if they are delayed being called up to start the season.

If you play someone really bad for a few years you should get a late round bonus pick. Like Corbin with a high ERA. Also a mid round pick if your announcers says C U Later.

That would be legit.

Zim basically went straight to the majors. Not sure why we couldn't do that with Crews. Send him to the minors, and see how he does. If he looks good, call him up in September. That keeps his rookie eligibility for next season. Lets him see what he needs to get better on over the offseason.

Good point. Need to get soemthing out of him now before the Nats ruin him.

Fortunately, Daddy Boras will force management changes if that happens

that was when Zim was the big add for the playoff push in 2005 (along with Preston Wilson). There's no reason to play Crews in the majors this year. Do not even add him to the 40 man roster until a week or so into the 2024 season, when there's less than 170 days left in the "championship season." He wins RoTY, great, he doesn't, you get an extra year.

No one considered the 2005 Nationals a playoff contender by the time Zim was called up.

No reason to play service time games. If he's ready in September, bring him up.

hold your horses a bit and let's see what he does in his first assignments. I like the path they took with Rendon.

First, he's going to play a few games in Fredericksburg just because it's the closest affiliate. That's a given if they are at home, even if it is less than a whole series worth of games. I don't think he skips Wilmington, but then Harrisburg makes sense for a bit longer. Only if he's crushing it and you plan on starting him day 1 in MLB in 2024 do you give him a cup of coffee in September.

But man, wouldn't it be fun to see him and Wood in the outfield late September?

That only works if he doesn't drag out signing.

Signing deadline is the 25th. It's not like old times where the signing deadline lasted forever.

I don’t see any reason to rush Crews while we are not a contender. Start him for a week or so in Fredsburg and then Wilmington and see how he does.  Minor league seasons are longer now so maybe even some time in Harrisburg this year. There’s also adjustment time to the wooden bat full time.
