Spain wins it in the last 3 minutes of regular time as England sleeps just a wink.

Get rid of Southgate, who stuck with his tired starters, neglecting Cole Palmer until late, neglecting Ivan Toney until late, ignoring Eze entirely.

Fans without tickets have broken through the security gates at Hard Rock Stadium, the COPA final has been delayed until they can get them out.

8:45 start scheduled now. They need to figure this stuff out before the World Cup.

I saw video a bit earlier of fans climbing through HVAC ducts to get into the stadium.

They needed to set up a perimeter and did not.  Lesson learned I hope

Scoreless at the half. Messi hurt but now looks ok.

So Southgate's Perpetual Chokers do it again... Yes - he has restored England's standing, in world soccer, from the mess he inheirited, but he will inevitably go down as the 'nearly manager' with the 'nearly team'. Too stuck in his ways, so he persisted with Kane even though it was obvious that he was off the pace (speculation, over here, as to whether he's just tired, or this is a sign that he is past his peak). The squad still has great promise, but it's clearly time for a fresh approach - it is thought unlikely that Southgate will choose to carry on, especially as this is the squad that are supposed to be developing into serious contenders in '26.

Gritting my teeth...the right team won. Spain have been the class act of the tournament, and the difference in quality, between the two sides, was painfully apparent. So the right result for the game, overall.

Disappointed for Canada - so close to coming third. Still a hugely creditable performance. Argentina's victory was expected - will it be Messi's swansong (he's starting to look past his sell-by date)? The scenes outside the ground are concerning, given that Hard Rock is a WC venue - we hope the organizers are learning from these 'dry-run' events.

The stuff in Miami is bizarre given that the stadium has hosted quite a few Super Bowls and the worst incident we've heard of as to those was that it rained one year (the NFL was quite upset about the rain to the point where they said they wouldn't award another Super Bowl there unless there were a roof over the seats, which of course was added). You'd think that stadium would be quite experienced in dealing with the crowds associated with high-profile games of this sort. I suppose it's fair to recognize that the Super Bowl is designated a "National Special Security Event" in which the feds get involved in managing things (and no doubt the World Cup championship game will be as well, although that's scheduled for the Meadowlands in 2026), so it's probably harder to break through the perimeter at a Super Bowl than at a game like last night's.

I wasn't watching the game, but I turned it on when I went upstairs to get ready for bed and when I saw how much time remained I assumed there must have been a weather delay, especially given that the field appeared to be fairly slick. Then while I was eating breakfast this morning I saw what had happened and was quite surprised.

I watched about the last 30 minutes. I continue to struggle to enjoy the game when there are so many flops and when nobody has any idea of how much time is left.  I have no idea, for example, when after about 7 minutes of debate at the end of the game, the ref let Argentina's goalie kick the ball and then the game was over.  I was reading this morning that FIFA is much better at time management and time communication but I haven't watched enough to tell the difference.

At Super Bowls you don’t have thousands of rabid fans without tickets trying to get into the stadium.  Needed a perimeter outside the stadium to screen them out.

I was rooting for England, and wife cheering for Spain. She thought Spain was the best team in the tournement and wanted the best to win.

I could not understand why Southgate chose not to put on fresh players in the second half, or at least not until the end. Palmer and Toney are a couple of my favorites from watching them play against Spurs the PL is shown on Peacock here. Sadly, Harry Kane might not be recovered from his injury, or he might be sliding past his best years. Southgate shoul;d have spotted an injury, if that was Kane's problem.

Everyone was rooting for Spain in the NYC Irish pub I watched the first half in before I had to dash to the airport.  Personally I thought England played a good possession game in the first half...I had a hard time following the second half on my phone going in and out of cellular reception but I was a bit surprised it didn't go to PKs.  And Canada/Uruguay...I guess at least Suarez merely scored rather than biting someone's carotid artery.

The main difference, between the SB and the WC, is fan animosity between certain nations - unlike the SB, you couldn't imagine mixed groups of fans at the WC. There were some issues at the Euro's, but they were played down in reporting.

Pochettino will be the USMNT coach.

I guess time for a new season thread?
