2023-24 International Free Agents

Placing this here (feel free to move it mods as I didn’t see an IFA thread), but McDaniel apparently spoke glowingly about a kid the Nats are slated to sign in the upcoming IFA class

No worries! Preciate you making this thread tbh. I expect that it'll be lightly trafficked, but whenever I run across any Hurtado info (or info on anyone else expected to be in the Nats' class), I'll stick it in here.

A few tidbits on Hurtado:

From Perfect Game(its a year old but still ....)
"7. Victor Hurtado, Outfield
Hurtado is a long limbed and slender prospect at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds with monstrous physical projection remaining. For how lean body type is, the left-handed hitter can impressively torque the barrel and hold angles to create violent bat speed when he launches. How accurate he can be with the barrel with that bat speed will ultimately decide the potential as he develops."

https://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=20908

From FanGraphs, ranked #5 of Latin American prospects.
"Hurtado is an ultra-projectable left-handed hitting outfield prospect with a lovely swing, one that features power-promising loft without compromising contact. He is as loose and flexible as any prospect in this class, and just the way his body moves when he's throwing from the outfield is reminiscent of Ichiro. Hurtado's swing has some length, but it is likely to shorten up as he gets stronger and doesn't have to use his whole body to ignite his swing. He's expected to sign with the Nationals."

Just saw that the Padres promoted a 16 year old to A-ball.  Would sure like to see Cristhian Vaquero get to the minors at some point as well.

I don’t want the Nats run anything like the Padres.

I might want the Nats to have AJ Preller draft for the Nats...he finds star shortstops.

The Washington Nationals have signed Jordan Qsar to a minor league contract. The outfielder has hit 74 home runs along with 226 RBIs throughout his minor league career.

Was in the Mexican winter league. Previously in Tampa and Philly systems.

International signing period begins:

The 2024 international signing period has officially begun. Young players from countries like the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and others often agree to deals years before they become official, but today is the day when pen can be put to paper. Each club has a fixed spending pool which they can use to give bonuses to players they sign from now until December 15. The lower-revenue clubs get larger pools and clubs sacrifice pool space by signing free agents that have rejected qualifying offers, while pool money can also be traded. Ben Badler of Baseball America is tracking each club’s pool space and the players they have agreements with.
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/01/the-opener-bellinger-international-signing-spring-training.html

Nats have $5.925 million, and have unofficial agreements in place for the following guys, per BA:
Quote
Victor Hurtado, OF, Dominican Republic (Scouting report here)
Angel Feliz, SS, Dominican Republic (Scouting report here)
Eddy Marmolejos, SS, Dominican Republic
Robert Santos, OF, Dominican Republic
Jean Carlos Robles, RHP, Dominican Republic
https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2024-mlb-international-signings-tracker/

FG (Longenhagen) has scouting reports on a few of these guys, Hurtado is his #5 among the amateurs, Feliz his #40:
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2024-international-prospect-rankings-and-scouting-reports/
Explaining his rankings, he points out about how they translate to the MLB draft and Hurtado's "defect:"
Quote
Once you get past the top three players in the class, the rest have at least one gap in their skill set or profile, be it a perceived cap on their offensive ceiling (Jose Perdomo, Fernando Cruz) or the fact that they’re buried way down the defensive spectrum (Adolfo Sanchez, Victor Hurtado). Those 45 FV prospects (basically a mid-to-late first round draft grade) will be fantastic and exciting additions to their new clubs, but considerations like this are how the FV layers are made.

Hurtado has a projected bonus of $2.7 million and a FV of 45 as a right fielder.
6' 2", 175 lbs, 16+

Hurtado is an ultra-projectable left-handed hitting outfield prospect with a lovely swing, one that features power-promising loft without compromising contact. He is as loose and flexible as any prospect in this class, and the way his body moves when he's throwing from the outfield is reminiscent of Ichiro. Hurtado's swing has some length, but it's likely to shorten up as he gets stronger and doesn't have to use his whole body to ignite it. He's expected to sign with the Nationals for between $2.5 million and $3 million.

Feliz has a projected bonus of $1.8 million and an FV of 35+ at 3B.
6'3", 190 lbs. Righty. 17.

Feliz is a lanky, broad-shouldered, slower-twitch athlete with some swing length and stiffness. Teams tracking bat-to-ball performance have a better eval on Feliz's hit tool than I do based on eyeball looks at his swing. This is the second consecutive year Washington has a big bonus player coming out of the Dominican "Banana Academy," a group that has sometimes showcased in Arizona while I've lived here. There are teams that like Feliz's hit/power combo enough to project him as a third base regular. I'm a bit more apprehensive, but see the power/projection elements here.
write ups are linked through the Board
https://www.fangraphs.com/prospects/the-board/international-players?sortcol=7&sortdir=desc

I'll add that the names Marmolejos and Robles are familiar, but I'm not sure if they are brothers or what.

and Hurtado and Feliz are up on the Nats website based on industry reporting, but still no official announcement from the Nats.
https://www.mlb.com/nationals/news/nationals-2024-international-prospects-signings?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

Hurtado - $2.8 million, Feliz - $1.7 million.

Just to show you how evaluations and data change, MLB.com had him as #20 among amateurs and 6'4", 180 lbs.
Quote
Evaluators already see the 16-year-old as an advanced hitter, one who has the upside to be a significant offensive contributor over time. At 6-foot-4, there is ample room for Hurtado to continue to fill out as he matures. The left-handed hitter sports a smooth and compact swing, and he stays through the ball with good extension, leading to consistent contact.

In addition to his abilities on the field, Hurtado has been praised for his work ethic, baseball IQ and overall makeup.

Feliz is #23 on the MLB.com list. "Room to fill out" is common I guess for kids. They also say he will benefit from daily instruction with the Nats. Not sure if that's damning by faint praise.
Quote
Advanced bat speed and pull-side power are the tenets of Feliz’s offensive approach, as his swing stays long through the zone. Armed with a solid approach and good timing -- along with solid physical tools -- there is an expectation that Feliz could become an impactful contributor as he hones his game.

The next Antuna is here
Hurtado has as much hype as Cristhian Vacquero. Feliz sounds like Antuna. Golden even said they will look at him at SS.

As for track records lately, Golden throw in a dig:
Quote
The Nationals’ recent international classes haven’t been as fruitful as some of the earlier ones under DiPuglia. Some of their top recent signees — Yasel Antuna ($3.9 million in 2016), Andry Lara ($1.25 million in 2019) and Armando Cruz ($3.9 million in 2021) — have struggled, with Lara and Cruz still at high Class A and low Class A.

Hurtado is interesting
Vaquero was the number 2 international prospect in 2022 and signed for just shy of 5 million. So no, Hurtado does not have the same hype as Vaquero.

Honestly, these guys are 16-18 and playing against a junior high talent level. I kind of .... nothing this? Like, meh, the international prospect pool is as random and volatile as the domestic one.

#5 on Fangraphs and #7 on Perfect game, so closer than your suggesting. The hype on Vaquero was more, but this guy is still hyped.
