He pretty much admitted to using it before the crackdown.   Then his performance dropped during the crackdown and he seemed to rebound when the umpires got more relaxed about it if I remember right.  I doubt he’s unique in that pattern though.  Did he get tossed for using it or for arguing about it?

We have no idea. Umps didnt do a postgame interview.

It should be noted that there have been three ejections since the sticky stuff crackdown. Umpire Phil Cuzzi has made all three ejections

Mets manager Buck Showalter says that Max Scherzer was ejected for having rosin on his glove.

Crew chief Dan Bellino on Scherzer: "The level of stickiness on his hand was much worse than it was even in the initial inspection that had taken place two innings prior...this was the stickiest that it has been since I've been inspecting hands, which now goes back 3 seasons."

I've said it before and I'll say it again now. Pre. Tacked. Ball.

It's 2023. Get your head out of your rear end and make the sport smarter. No more rosin. Give the pitchers a dry towel every inning and use pre tacked balls. No more need for rosin or spidertack. If someone uses a substance, it's easily found and ejections are made. Take away any excuses.

This should be simple, but leave it to MLB to enforce something without having a true solution in play. And before anyone says anything, yes, I am aware they are trying pre tacked balls again in the minors this year.

Spoke to source today who says Scherzer has "zero chance" of avoiding mandatory 10-game suspension from ejection. Source notes that 2023 MLB memo explicitly says rosin can be deemed an illegal substance if overused. That it's not supposed to be applied anywhere but on the mound.
